Manicure

They're going to file your nails smooth, and buff the ridges off their surfaces. They're going to push back your cuticles, which is so easy I can't believe people pay to have it done. They will want to smooth your callouses, too. Then they'll moisturize.

Your hands will be soft and smooth. You'll have hands like Clay Aiken.

So playing bass will be crappy for a little while again?

They do what now?

The little Korean lady in the nail shop "tsk-tsk'd" over my callouses. "These need to be smooth!"

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!

I ran for my life.

My dad got a manicure once. He had to go to some hoity-toity meeting with the suits, after he got promoted from the shop to management. They smoothed his callouses. He hated it. He bought himself a kit so he could buff his own nails shiny so the suits wouldn't complain, but he never got another professional manicure again.

They use this cream that has grit in it, and a thingie that looks like a tiny cheese grater. Same thing I use on my heels, more or less. They may have something more hi-tech now, though...its been 15 years since I've seen the inside of a nail salon...that experience freaked me out so much, I can't even stand to cross the threshold of one of those shops.

You soak your hands in a soapy solution to soften the cuticles and callouses, then they do the gritty cream/cheese grater thing, then they will either use an aromatic oil or a high-end moisturizer. They may apply almond oil to your nails, as well.

That's how they used to do one of my old girlfriend's hands. She can't stand to have callouses, so she has her hands done regularly. Don't know if the technique has changed or not...I don't hang with her anymore. She married a good ol' boy, had two babies, and won't go out anywhere anymore at all. She was too girly-girl anyway...always getting her manicure or her fake nails or her hair done, or wanting to go shop. Meh. Waste of time and money, if you ask me.

For the price of a manicure, I can buy the nice DR strings I like.

Just tell them you do *not* want your callouses done. If they try, jerk your hand back and don't give it to them again until they sign a promise of non-callous-smoothing, in blood. Their blood!

Maybe they won't be so pushy about it, since you're a guy. I swear, that woman acted like I was a freak because I didn't want that callous thingie done.

I have weak fingernails that break every now and then. Related to bassplaying, I like them to be large enough (used to bite them all the time ) so I can put some "nail" attacking strings if I want to. Guess I'll try a manicure just so they don't break that easily...:D
As for callouses... they are certainly welcomed:D:D

Knew a guy in college that used to cut up ping pong balls and shape it into fingernails and glue them on to play classical guitar because he kept breaking his... :eyebrow:

I almost got something like this once...

ROFL okay okay maybe I exaggerated a little.
But still...I never followed through because I started bass.
And you can't play with nails like those.

I like having my nails a little long, so when I started and I had to keep them short so to make up for that I let the nails I don't need cut grow to make up for the ones I do have to cut. I call them my bass nails.

My co-workers call them my coke nails. :hmm:

Maybe I'll put flowers and diamonds just on these two.

A few years ago in Vegas one of my customers took a bunch of us knifemakers to a spa. We got massages, and skin treatments, sauna, etc., etc., etc. No funny stuff, a few wives were with us also. I got a manicure too...............:scowl:

My hands, fingers and fingernails are always nasty looking, dirty, cuts, burns, scabs. They came out looking like Clay Akin's. I felt like Clay Akin :crying: :rollno:

My hubby's hands are always beat-up looking. But I like it. No man should be forced to have Clay Aiken hands!!!

A man's manicure should be conducted with a belt sander, motor oil, a shovel handle and some good ol fashioned dirt. Anything more than that, suspension of Man Card.

Hey, that's how my dad got his manicures 'til the suits got ahold of him! And he buffed them up just the bare minimum...enough to keep them from complaining. When the company changed his job description to require a college degree, and he in his 50's and never graduated from high school, he said heck with them, and did like he wanted until he retired.

That explains my attraction to men who get their hands dirty, I guess. :)

Cherie, who loves the smell of GoJo in the morning...smells like...hunkiness!!!
