Maple Necks

Hey, this is my first post on TalkBass, and to be honest I'm not overly sure where to put it. I have a Fender jazz Bass with a rosewood neck. I want to put a maple neck on it, but my local guitar shop stocks 4 basses most and i cant see them having necks in stock. Ebay necks never have tuner keys on them and I dont really want to try that myself (putting them on new necks and rrisk ruining the neck instantly), so i'm a-wondering, is there an online shop that does international shipping (i live in ireland) and sells maple necks??

Thanks

:D

You could also look for Mighty-Mite necks on ebay, they're supposed to be decent.

Just a small detail: neck are actually very often maple.
The *fingerboard* changes and has different wood. In this case you are talking about a rosewood fingerboard, no the neck itself.
Just FYI for you talk with a bass/guitar technician.

Is it easy to screw up installing tuner keys on a new neck? What type of tools are involved? can it be done at home or should i take it to my guitar shop and see if they could do it? Also, are SX a good brand? They certainley look aesthetically pleasing.

SX are supposed to be beginner instruments, but lots of people here really like them and change out all the hardware and electronics for better stuff. I would do it, but im in the UK and they are hard to get hold of over here,(grrr...need 75' jazz!!)

changing tuners involves drilling holes, unless you go seriously Over the top with the drilling and manage to drill through the neck i wouldent worry about it going wrong

A awful lot of tuners interchange with each other, so it's no problem taking them off one neck and installing them on another. I've been doing repairs and setups on my own axes for years, and the only ones that still have the original tuners are my LP Deluxe and the Chet Atkins Country Gent.

If you DO have to drill, use a drill press: it's very easy to get a hole that's not perpendicular to the wood and then you have issues down the road.:crying:

If you are trading a neck from the same make/model for another one with a different fingerboard, it'll probably not be a problem.
