Rosewood cause its pretty.

RW looks best on dark colored basses IMO.... never got the black n maple love thing , but vintage tint birdseye or flame maple is the SH!T !!!

BUT, I still think my CAR Glaub w/ RW board was the sexiest bass I've ever owned.... wish it had sounded like maple :hmm:.

I definitely hear a difference - especially when I switch basses during a gig or rehearsal, because I often have to adjust EQ to sound the same on basses with different boards...

This is the kind of input that matters to me! You have to do your comparison w/ a band to hear the difference.... PERIOD! I don't care one bit which one is "BETTER", that's all subjective and honestly who can define "better" anyways? I just want people to realize, admit, whatever that there IS a difference tonally.

I have owned basses both with rosewood and maple necks and the sound differences between the two (if same type of bass of course) is very small if at all noticeable to me. I can appreciate both, but from a aesthetically-motivated decision I have found maple necks to be my choice. But like I said it's not really a deal breaker for me if a bass has a rosewood.

I'll be gigging my RW basses for sure w/ my cover band, but I'd have to go all maple if my originals band was still going.

Some bassists say that there's no audible difference between maple and rosewood. I can hear a difference ... rosewood sounds generally darker than maple to me. However, there's a fair amount of variance so you can't make totally blanket statements about it. Graphite reinforcement (or steel in the case of Warmoth necks) generally adds brightness so a steel reinforced Warmoth rosewood neck could actually sound brighter than a non reinforced maple neck. I think that mass of the neck makes a difference, too. I have a Warmoth maple/maple Precision neck that is VERY thick and chunky and is actually deeper sounding than most of my rosewood necks. When all is said and done, certain necks mate better (sonically and with respect to playability) with certain bodies due to all kinds of factors ... neck pocket fit and depth of neck pocket with relation to depth of the neck heel for example. I have a Warmoth mahogany Precision that I bought off of TalkBass that originally came with a maple/rosewood Jazz neck. I also have a 50th Anniversary Precision which probably has the best neck in my bass stable ... solid as a rock stable, sets up and plays great. However, it is a VERY bright sounding neck ... really too bright for the blues that I mostly play. I installed it on the above Warmoth mahogany Precision body (which is very bassy sounding) and that bass suddenly came alive. The brightness of that neck along with the deep sound of the body yielded a very chunky tone that just kills.

+ 1 this is how I feel as well

Wow, this is great information, as always peppered with slights from a select few who feel the question is invalid or redundant. Regardless, lively debate and discussion is always interesting, thanks for participating. I believe again my goal is purely one of aesthetics, not sonic variation. I appreciate the inputs.

Agreed - and I hope I didn't come off as saying one was "better" than the other, because I like both... I think there are slight tonal differences, but they are real, nonetheless...

I agree that aesthetics is the major concern between the two, since any tonal differences can be easily overcome with a little EQ...

Gosh, TB should just remove the "start new thread" button entirely, and replace it with a "search" button. Then, perhaps the STFU-and-do-a-search-Nazis around here can get some sleep. :-)

I personally prefer maple for a number of reasons, first of all actually quite a few people will argue that they can tell the difference between them based on the assumption that maple is brighter and snappier while r/wood is deeper and warmer. I wouldn't know how much of that is true, I have had loads of basses with either woods and found those characteristics on both basses, and quite frankly those factors were more depending on the strings freshness and gauge used to be honest.

Plus the pups, that cover like 80% of the tone…

Since when does using the search function disable the "new thread" button? AFAIK, you can still search a topic and then, if needed, post a new thread about it.

I guess the operative words here are "if needed".

EDIT:

Sieg Heil!

BTW, equating "search first" with Nazism is ridiculous. And stupid.
