Okay, it ain't no kind of crisis, but I'm kind of going back and forth. As some of you may know from my posts here, I stopped playing bass about 10 years ago (I played--gigged, recorded, etc.--regularly for many years prior to that.)
Now, back in the day, I insisted on rosewood necks.
But over time, during my hiatus from bass and other electric instruments, I would play one a friend owned or go try out a bunch of basses in a music shop and I came to really like the sort of hard feel (and look) of maple.
I decided my next bass would have a maple neck.
Now I have the bass (just a simple SX-P) and while I am really getting into playing again and I think the bass is fine (actually astounding for the $$$), I've come to think I really am more at home with rosewood. I don't know. It's so subjective-- many variables from bass to bass, etc. But I think I'm more attuned to the rosewood. It seems more comfortable and quick somehow.
I don't plan on kicking the SX out of bed...no resale value anyway, and for the price I like having the option of a maple neck even if I'm thinking about getting another SX with a rosewood fingerboard. It looks really sharp too, for what that's worth.
Anyways, just rambling really. Wondered if anyone else had gone back and forth or who was pretty set in their ways as far as maple vs. rosewood, thoughts on the relative merits of each, etc.
I'm beginning to feel like maple is maybe too...brittle feeling (for lack of a better term) and that rosewood is more supple and smooth.
I'm a n00b here really, and I am SURE the maple/rosewood threads have been done to death here. I didn't even search the forum. Just curious as to who likes what and why.
