marcus miller - best recording?

have just recently brought 'marcus' to hear what the fuss is all about and i must admit his playing blew me away.he's definitely got the chops etc.to be honest i felt the album was a little too much bass masterbation for my liking and i won't be buying any more but i do appreciate his talent.

IMO, if you want to own one CD of Marcus as leader, the Ozell Tapes is the one. It's a very 'live' raw recording direct from the front of house board from a recent tour. All the 'hits' are on there, and it's interesting to hear the variations in Marcus's tone as the tour progresses. Fabulous disc.

+1 to Mikebass's comments. I GREATLY prefer Marcus as a sideman, and the Sanborn stuff is just simply perfect if you want to hear Marcus in a supportive role.

I'm sure Gadd is on that album...somewhere. Maybe he's on "Conversations", a Tom Schumann composition with Eddie Gomez (SG sounds more like a Jazz trio + horn on this tune).
BTW, "City Kids" (the opening tune) is played by Kim Stone. That much I do remember.

Don't go by Wiki, either. I just checked & they think Eddie Gomez played on everything! ;)

Now I'm thinking Incognito may have more of a Marcus presence than City Kids(maybe his intro to SG? Previous SG albums had a strong Will Lee presence goin' on).

+1... it's amazing how good some of that early pop jazz stuff is compared to the stuff that passes for 'smooth jazz' today. The Grusin stuff, the Carlton and Ritenour stuff, the early Spyro stuff back when it was basically the sax player (forgot his name... Jay something) was using top studio cats for the recordings, the Yellow Jackets stuff, early electric Metheny, Sanborn, etc., etc. Grooves with actual interesting changes, melodies, etc. Nice stuff.

I'd have to say Silver Rain as far as his solo stuff---

All the Sanborn stuff is great (it's what made me "discover" Marcus back in the late 80's)--he plays more of a bass-role, which, duh, is why David Sanborn's name is on the album...but MM did produce many of those albums, so his
style is all over it.

The original version of this tune is on Kenny Loggin's Keep The Fire..with, I assume, Loggins' bassist at the time, George Hawkins.
Richard Page (Pages, Mr. Mister, etc) & Michael Jackson on harmony vocals.

Man with A Horn, after that his tone got progressively annoying on the top end

his latest stuff is a shadow of what his tone used to be
I wonder if his hearing is so impared that he over compensates with that high end snap on top
