Herbie Hancock led a Headhunters tour with Marcus Miller on bass back in 2002. I saw the show in St. Louis.

How was it?

It was cool. I believe it was the first show of the tour. I found out that Marcus went to a local GC and got a Sting Signature P-bass because Herbie told him he needed a P for the right sound. John Mayer was in the band and he nearly decapitated Marcus Miller with his headstock. Mayer also had a solo spot where he sang a song. Marcus had a bass clarinet solo a la Bennie Maupin too. Marcus did play his Jazz too; he played it on Chameleon. The crowd got up and danced to Chameleon too.

Who was playing drums in that 2002 version of the Headhunters, wasn't it Vinnie Coliuta?
The thing that seems noteworthy about this 2024 lineup is the return of Harvey Mason...who, at least for music like this that is so dependent on an infectious groove, I would much rather hear behind the kit.

Marcus is great but I prefer Paul Jackson for the Headhunters. Too bad he is not around anymore.

Besides Herbie who are original members for the new lineup?

Terri Lynne Carrington was on drums in 2002 when I saw the show.

Well this is something you don't see everyday. Marcus playing a 57 Precision on Chameleon.

This is interesting. Marcus starts the song onstage then jets after about a minute and a half. Someone else is playing bass after that and takes a solo around the 9:30 mark.

I went to the show on the 14th. I actually found out about it by reading this thread back in February. It was a terrific concert. I bought Headhunters when it came out in ‘74, but didn’t see the tour. I did see Herbie 5 years ago with James Genus and Vinnie Colaiuta. At that concert they played a couple of songs from Headhunters, as I’m sure Herbie generally does. But I’ve got to say, I much preferred the original band + Marcus renditions at the Hollywood Bowl. They were great. They played for about an hour and a half and then took a break. When they came back on stage they had the Headhunters and Herbie’s touring band with James Genus on the stage together. They played Actual Proof starting out with the original version and then went into his “new” band’s version. Then the Headhunters guys left the stage and Herbie’s touring band continued for a while. I can’t overstate how much I enjoyed hearing the Headhunters material performed by the Headhunters. They were/are a very special band. Marcus did a great job “subbing” for Paul Jackson. He played the bass part seriously and authentically.
