Marijuana and Bass

The problem with cannabis is that all too often, you read some story about some violent criminal who was smoking it before committing some crime. (Which, does not make any sense as the effect is either that you are too mellow to leave the sofa and rob or kill some one, or too paranoid that you might get caught!)

i'd wager that more sober people commit violent crimes than Pot-Heads.... wanna bet?

the recordings of me playing stoned are superior to my tastes to the performances straight. there just a touch more nuance and a greased slip in the creativity... my goal is to be that good un-"inspired".

for the sake of compliance with all federal laws which require prosecution for such actions I must stipulate that those recordings were all made well beyond the current statute of limitations for the jurisdictions within which they occurred...:ninja:

Marijuana isn't a drug and except for the U/A part most of this post is a misconception.

The misconception here is that pot is all drugs. ...... 99% of weed on the street is hydro and grown never seeing a second of real sunlight. ...... They use electric/hydro grow-ops filled with as much agent orange weed and bug killer to wipe out a small city. .....
A natural grown pot plant grown in the soil, in sunlight takes 6 to 8 months to mature to bud. ...... 99% of what you are smoking is grown to maturity in about a month. ..... The pot you smoke is like a rolled up chicken nugget. ..... Nothing natural in that. ...... So, please stop holding on to this 60's dream of peace and love and, and, and. ...... The 60's ended and THEY won. ...... Cause we're still at WAR!

Very, very, soon the joint you smoke with your buds before cranking out the tunes and jamming man till sunset will come from Monsanto.

If you're going to smoke go natural.
Know your source.

From my last band experience: I don't smoke pot but both guitar players did before the gig and during each break. The result- after they smoked weed the set list got off track, the band "fielded" more ****** requests and the bass player (me) and drummer (who also doesn't smoke) were annoyed.

Bottom line- if you are a stupid pot head in a band, be up front to the other members before you get a lot of gigs on the schedule. Lame! (* Note: I hate drug users in bands)

I will say this, however- it is easier to deal with a stoner than a drunk........

I'm not going at it from a natural standpoint so much as a it's not even remotely close to being harmful or as addictive as heroin or meth use.

The poster I was addressing that to has Marijuana lumped with all controlled substances,...but there are serious difference between weed,...and those harder drugs. Also the misconception that drug testing is for safety reasons. It may be spun like that,..but I think drug testing is a method of surveillance and somewhat discriminatory.

I feel like it .......................................................................................................................................................................................wait, what were we talking about????

I think it's one thing it you are a gigging musicians and (from the sounds of it) playing covers and need to be professional about it. I avoid going to work stoned,...not that I couldn't do it,...but out of respect for my bosses. It's the same if you are a working musician. That's your job.

In my case,...I'm in an improv oriented noise band (see sig). It IS stoner music,...and I fit the bill and so does getting stoned. I have the expectation that people won't get it. That's fine,...we exist for the people that do and FWIW,...everyone in that band is a stoner.

EDIT: no longer sober.

I frequent grasscity forums and there was a similar thread a while back there on their site. I think that everyone is different and just as everyone is going to be affected differently by anything they put into their body, Marijuana is going to be no different. With some people it may help them focus and get into the music and others it may distract them.
I think that asking what people's opinions are on smoking marijuana and playing are the same thing as asking about taking a specific prescription medication and playing bass. It really depends on the person and things like how tall they are, how much they weigh, what they eat, how often they smoke, etc, etc.
That's my opinion, anyway.

And by the reference to Monsanto was that soon Pot will be a controlled substance and as addictive as THEY, Monsanto and the Government wish to make it. (Pot today is much stronger than anything produced 30/40-years ago.) ....... And when it is legalized, which it will be soon enough, they can then arrest you for being in possession of an illegal substance that was not produced by who? ...... The Government and Monsanto. ...... Drug testing is surveillance but it's really not as effective as the old way of arresting as may people as possible. Which was the method from the 1930's all the way to the 1980's. .... But, unfortunately the courts and Government can't afford to maintain that burden of cost. .... So, they've encouraged companies to do it at their expense. ..... They know people are doing it and don't care but soon it will be Who's they're doing. ..... Just like alcohol.

First off, I definitely believe it should be legal for adults. Legalize it and tax the heck out of it.

Back in the day I was convinced I would smoke every day for the rest of my life. When I found out I was going to become a father back in 1998, I put it down. Just wasn't worth the risk. After that I began working professionally for different city departments and state agencies (and still do currently.) Drug tests are par for the course, so I just don't smoke.

I also don't miss it. Never really did, much to my surprise. I have smoked it on a few occasions in the past decade and didn't really enjoy the experience. Felt good for about 10 minutes, then I just wanted to eat some junk food and go to bed. Guess I've gotten older.

That said, I don't drink either (diabetes.) While I never was much of a drinker I do sometimes wish I had something to wind down with after a stressful week. I'd be lying if I said there aren't times (though rare) when I really wish I could smoke part of a joint, but it's just not worth it to me.

I don't feel like pot really contributed one way or another to my playing back when I was really into it. Didn't feel like it held me back or opened me up creatively. It was just something I did.

I have played in countless jam sessions, recordings and at gigs while I was stoned. I think I was just one of those that could handle it well. I didn't rely on it, but it didn't hamper anything that I could tell, and I listened to many recordings of said gigs and jams and they sounded nice and tight and free-flowing.

In the interest of full disclosure, back in those days (through most of the 80s and half the 90s) I was also very into hallucinogens. I don't care to touch them now, but I had some pretty rewarding musical experiences whilst under the influence of LSD and shrooms.

Eh, whatever works for you. Some people handle it well; some don't. People should be free to do what they want as adults in this society. If someone wants to get high or trip, it ain't none of my business.

:eyebrow: Wow, you are completly delusional.

Another excuse for addiction and substance abuse ... "I am not the only one doing it" or "Others do it and they still function just fine"

There is a reason it is called substance abuse!

This is silly. Just because someone smokes pot doesn't mean they are an "addict" OR are committing "substance abuse." They may just be someone who smokes pot now and then.

I agree there are people who abuse it--if you feel like you have to be high 24/7 or "need" it for some reason or another, and I realize it can be psychologically addicting for some, but just smoking pot doesn't make one an addict or a substance abuser anymore than someone who has a morning cup of coffee or some beers on the weekend.

I've always found that the people who, without fail, wait in the drive through line at Tim Horton's every morning for 15 minutes to get their large double double to be more of an addict than your average marijuana user.

My definition of an average user: Either someone like my uncle who just takes a few tokes from a pipe to take the edge off after work, or the person who'll smoke up at a party or such.

And I guess being non-Canadian friendly -> a double double is a coffee with two creams and two sugars.
