Markbass LM II or GK 700RB-II

I can't compare so much. I will tell you that I have the LMII and I am very happy. Great punchy tone. Very adjustable in terms of shaping the sound. Best of all, extremely portable. That little head pumps out some serious power. Is it better than the GK? I dunno. I find most people just "recommend" whatever they have whether they understand the trade-offs or not. I'm not going to do that. I'll just say I like the LMII.

Little Mark=great amp
Little Mark + 4x10hlf=bad pair
GK=not enough to push that cab

I had an swr sm500 that sounded fabulous with my 4x10hlf. Unfortunately I sold both in my quest for tone but the SWR sm500 bridged with the full 500 watts sounded great with that particular cab. The hlf is tuned low, almost muddy at times..the clarity of the swr lended itself well to the cab and made for a DYNAMITE combo! Just my 2 cents.......try an SWR......ya might like the pair........my little mark sounded BAD through this cab.............

Sorry I just have a personal dislike for GK based on all the issues I have had with them over the years........I have had POOR experiences with them, reliability and performance issues..........just posting my "opinion":help:

"not enough to push this cab" should be....i don't like these!

So you are THAT guy!! JK :) I've had no luck personally with Peavey, except as smoke machines. Some of us have Brands that just won't work for us.

The whole point of Jeff saying he HAD G-K but now has MB implies he likes the stuff he has now better than what he gave up to get it. But just because people rave about a specific brand doesn't mean that a great head is going to sound good with every cab on the face of the planet. Everything plays a part in your tone. From strings to pups to how your head matches with your cab. There is more than one post on this thread that says the LMII doesn't pair well with the 4x10HLF, ... LISTEN TO THEM. Or even better, go down to a music store and try out a MB with a 4x10HLF, listen with your own ears and see what they are talking about. My best friend has a G-K 700rb-II, it is a great head but I don't know what it would sound like with a ported Ampeg 4x10, a couple of people have suggested Acoustic, and they are a real bang for the dollar you spend on them, I would look into one of these or see if you can find a used Ampeg head (MIA) IME Ampeg sounds great paired with Ampeg. In the end all that matters is that you are happy with your rig, try out everything you can, look at how much you can spend, and then choose what you want based on what sounds best to your ears. The LMII is my favourite amp and I have heard others say they really dig it with their ampeg 410. In fact I believe there is a youtube clip with a review of those two unit.

Personally I've owned my LMII since the summer of 07 and played it thru many many different cabs and my conclusion is that I have yet to hear it thru a cab that makes the LMII sound crappy. It mates well with alot of different cabs. That is not true with certain amp & cab combinations.

The great thing is the LMII is so cheap for what you get. $475 for an amp of that calibre is outstanding IMO. You can buy one on the TB classifieds try it out for awhile and if it aint your cup of tea, flip it for virtually no loss. Or take advantage of the GC 30 day money back guarantee but at full price.

My bass player bought an LMII at GC after an extensive audition through various cabs. The Markbass cabs sound like ass, and the Ampeg 610 Classic sounded the best. Go figure.

This little amp grows on you. It is very adjustable for tone, and runs completely cool to the touch. The 80mm fan was not audible during the audition (unlike the SVT head next to it).

One 1/4" and one Speakon is a bit odd, but not a show stopper. It does need to be mounted in a rack or other protection, as the knobs stick out the front of the face. One good whack, and the circuit board is a goner.

MB sells a pair of rack ears ($30) that adapts this small box to a standard 19" rack. A DIY mini-box, carpeted with corners is an easy project and would be smaller than using an effects rack.

Yep this guy is using that combo. Sounds much like I thought it would, like an ampeg cab. The LMII doesn't add or take away much from the basic bass tone unless you start with the filters and use more than a 1/4 turn of EQ.

Cant beat the bang/buck factor, although a 98lb cab with a 6lb head is kinda.. well.. :ninja: I wont go there.
