Markbass Megathread PART 2

I was in the Cincinnati GC today to pick up some strings and they had a huge MB display with a lot of cabinets. Some guy was playing the TA501 and it sounded interesting...not sure it is $400.00 more interesting than the LMII, but if your into tubes maybe it is.

It's not just a tube in the preamp. It's a tube-based COMPRESSOR, so there's more to it than might have been immediately apparent.

The way it's designed, the tube is always in the circuit, even if the compressor's threshold has not been crossed, so it's not exactly like an SA450/LMII when the compressor's not active, but it's also not quite the same thing as a preamp design where the tube is intended to play a major role, either. FYI/FWIW, anyway.

That said, I've also checked one out, and I do like them, but I'm also not sure it's worth an extra $400 to me, either.

Does any one know if the heads are removable from the combo's?
I'm interested in pairing an LMKII w/a Schroeder, but I can't swing both right now (new baby!). My thouthts are to get the small 1x12 combo now, and get the Schroeder 1212L down the road.
Another option would be to add an Acme B1 (8ohm) to the combo and leave it at that.

I know there are "better" cabs out right now, but I don't have the $$ for a new one... I came across to this used Goli III and I bought it (I actually always liked SWR cabs more than the amps)... But I'm not sure I'm fond of the Eden WT550 I'm using right now... the mids gets a little strange, sometime!

Pushes that cab easily. Pushes my Shroeder 410R easily. Same with my Epifani NYC212. Through Kevin Brubaker's Eden D410XLT, it sounded like it could easily blow it up or at a minimum take both eardrums out. I also tried it with my 4 ohm SWR Triad with my Marleaux JB Deluxe 5 jazz bass and damn near went into a slap coma. It sounded so right slapping that I couldn't stop. I need to sell that cab... I don't think I've slapped that much on a gig in more than ten years.

does it kick in?

its a PS112 - man this rig is LOUD!!!:hyper: :hyper:

coming from 2x10 Nemesis combo, i had no idea what i was missing in terms of separates

i can't even go past 11 cos the thing is so damn loud

Nope. According to the block diagram, there's some sort of limiter built-in, but I don't know how it works. I assume it's not so much for musical reasons and more for electronic reasons.

There is a compressor in the LMII technically speaking, but it is actually set up more like a peak stop limiter, which is a compressor set to an extremely high ratio, and with a fairly hard-knee threshold. It's part of the amp's protection circuitry, not actually intended as a sonic effect in the way we normally think of a compressor. The LMII's manual and block diagram within refer to it as the "limiter." It kicks in just as the amp is near or at the top of its dynamic range in order to prevent or greatly slow the amp from going into severe clipping in order to protect the output devices (transistors), preserve sound quality by preventing or reducing unwanted (and unmusical) distortion, and of course, protect your speakers! Below this "kick in" threshold (lower volumes) it should be doing nothing until and unless you reach the very last few db of the amp's headroom.

That's a great setup. Another 112 would balance best, but some folks here do the 110/112 or 112/210 or 112/115 thing depending on what you're going for.

ok here I go... I've been debating on which head to get... I have a schroeder 1212L and I've been looking for a cab... it's mainly for pubs/clubs and to use as a monitor in big stages... I only have two heads in mind... GK1001rbII or Little Mark II... pro's and con's?

I'll be playing mostly alternative rock

I have a fender jazz american deluxe FMT 5
