Markbass Megathread PART 2

Yeah, I mean, it's not like it sounds bad or doesn't work at all, but the DI out is just not hot enough to drive most power amps to their full output, so what it really boils down to is, is it enough? If you get a beefy enough power amp, it probably would be... if for no other reason than the ability to drive lots more speakers... if you have them.

So again, it "works" and it does sound just fine, but it's a question of if the output levels would be satisfactory.

I will add one "frustrated comment". :) The SA-450 is basically the same thing as an LMII, and has an adjustable DI that can be up to 2.5x hotter than the LMII, which would be more than enough, but last I heard, GC has no plans to import that one, so if you get one (such as from Canada), there's no warranty at all.
If I added an ART MP to the chain that would boost the significantly (70 db?) and thus render this setup a viable option?

I'm more curious than anything. The LMII is plenty loud enough with my 1212R as it stands. Never can have too much power though!

This is why I didn't get one from Canada. Peter Murray
tells me there will be no SA450 for the US market.
The funny thing is that when I use an external eq to boost
at 100 and 4.5, the head works much better for me.

What I said was that GC was not ordering it at this time but that we are hoping to get the SA450 into the US by the end of the year.

Let me just say this about using the LMII as a "preamp". While it's true it doesn't work ideally as that, and I've griped about it (somewhat tongue in cheek of course), I should qualify that... especially since this is at least the second time this has come around.

Use as a preamp was not at all a design goal, so it's not really a deficiency. The amp does exactly what it was designed to do, and does it extremely well.

Affirmative!
Question? Does the effects out work better as a "pre out"?

the effects out sounds great as a line out for recording. Haven't tried the actual line out yet.
True, the level is fine, but again, you won't be getting any tone from the LMII so you might as well just use a plain DI box. If you want the LMII to actually play a role in the tone, you have to use the DI out and you have to have it set to "post" (which is its default).

i'm getting good tone from it. I assume you mean tone controls. I leave the tone controls flat anyway. Sounds great with the sadowsky.

Peter! Peter! Peter!
You've just made me a very happy bass player!
I could have sworn you told me the 500 would be sold
here instead of the 450. I've never been so happy to be
wrong.
Not to be pessimistic but the "by the end of the year"
probably means next spring, but I don't care. I'll wait for it.
Oh I will wait for it. Thanks

My point wasn't that it would sound bad, merely that there's no point in using the LMII if that's all you want. A plain active DI box/line driver would do exactly the same thing and fit in your bass case, 'cause you're not actually using the LMII's voicing/coloring at all. No biggie, but that's all I'm saying.

not exactly true. The effects send is after the buffered input and gain control so arguably it's different than a plain DI box.

I thought you would be stuck shipping it to Italy and paying for return shipping.

Peter should confirm.

Yeah, I do see your point. I've never had any single piece of equipment I've owned fail on me, so I'll just have to keep my fingers crossed that I won't regret the decision. That would be interesting though to pay to ship it to Canada and then pay them to ship it to Italy and back plus pay the charge for warranty service. I guess that means I'm the bravest one here.:smug:

Hey B String,
I talked to Peter as well and he was basically expecting it to be around November. I; however, could not wait that long.:smug:
