Markbass - the evolution revolution

+ 1!!!! Not to mention I don't want a Markbass b/c I like to buy from independant retailers that offer high level of service (as oppossed to the bass gear being put in the back of the store next to the bathroom and behind the drums).
In my GC, the bass section is adjacent to the guitar section and the drum room. Fairly prominently displayed, although kind of small.

Sorry, this gets my post for silliest post of the day.

There is no "one amp" that works for everyone. Me, not a fan of the Markbass...and I am not alone. Certainly not a fan of Epifani either.

I am glad that you found your sonic nirvana. But to say that it could be best for everyone is just silly.

Silly? Is that all my well structured and thoroughly thought out comments are worth to you?:spit::D

Anyways............. Maybe there is "one amp" for everyone and I think Markbass figured it out. I based my original comments on the presumption that it just might benefit some of my fellow bassists in knowing that they could cut through a whole lot of the B.S. and overwhelming choices that seem to swarm us bassists out there when trying to sort out our gear. I personally have lost thousands of dollars going from amp to amp to amp. I am not perfect, the Markbass stuff is not perfect. It does sound great though, it's light and it's affordable. Oh yeah and it sounds like my bass. Isn't that what a bass amp should do? Amplify your bass' tone?

Was I trying to say that Markbass could satisfy most if not all bass players, you damn right I was. I truly believe that this gear is that revolutionary. I have been courting the idea of using Markbass over the last three years. The first time I was looking into Markbass I didn't have a good idea of what good tone was and I had a specific sound in my head that I was searching for, albeit one that was useless on gigs. Remember, other bassists don't hire us so don't take my word for it if you really don't want to.:spit:

There is a fundamental tone expected if not demanded by the folks that hire bassists and I believe that Markbass churns out the goods. So do my bandleaders, wait a minute, if they pay me and hire me back on then I must be doing something right. Hmmm, that Markbass stuff is gonna keep me working too and it's stupid light. Did I mention that this stuff is stupid light?

After a few years of growing up and getting my head out of my a$$ I discovered that it's all in the bass and in the hands. I figured out that if I could get an amp that coloured my bass' tone the least and didn't break my back then I would be ahead of the game - enter Markbass.

Like or not, in my humble opinion, this is the first amp that I really feel can do it all.:D So says me, now let me step down from the soapbox, the lights are too bright up here.:spit::D

You know, this is so weird. I would say that you and I have very similar tastes in amps, yet I think the LMII is almost as good as having an actual SVT there and you hate it. I wonder how our interpretation differs.

I couldn't get into it. Maybe its the cabs, as the OP says the MB cabs don't sound good and that's what I used them through, but at least to me, the LMII was nothing like my V4 and that's the bench mark for comparison for me. I think another big turn off is posts like this one.

Eh, the guy's excited about it. I have to say I felt the exact same way when I got mine so I can't throw stones.

The cabs, however, are definitely an acquired taste. They sit in the mix great, but a lot of people don't get past the sound in the store. I can dig that. There are prettier sounding cabs out there, but in a band setting is where they shine.

His point is that its nice of you to talk about how much you like your mark bass, but there are a lot of people like me who think it sounds like garbage and wouldn't touch it.

Thanks for clarifying that. I am truly getting educated here, maybe next time you can teach me how to walk and chew gum at the same time. One step forward, two steps back............oh sorry we're you done?:spit:

OK, I was on your side until that one. Mellow out a little...it's OK for others not to like Markbass. It doesn't diminish you.

When i was in the market for a new amp my dealer gave me a LM2 to try for the weekend. I A/B-ed with the head i have now, an EBS classic 450 (same cab, same bass, same cables even) and it took me about 1/2 a second to find out that the LM2 doesn't have balls, or at least not very big ones.

So, it's not for everyone, like you seem to be suggesting.

EBS make some great gear, no doubt about it.

Jimmy????

:D I actually understand the sentiment of that post. I also wonder how many people clicked on the thread without reading the title.

It says Markbass right there. For the people who don't like Markbass and better yet the ones who are sick of reading about them, it seems rather masochistic to be here.

Don't it?
:D

Me? I enjoy the comedy.

This isn't a popularity contest. No need to take sides here, not once in my original post did I slander another brand of amp. His post was clearly nothing more than a poor attempt to show that he has no objective reason to not use Markbass other than his comment that Markbass sounds like garbage - is that some type of technical term that escapes me? I simply adjusted my response accordingly.

I would never expect anyone here to choose Markbass unless they liked it. If cats don't like Markbass, that's cool. Slinging mud at Markbass isn't though, I didn't start this thread for a flame war. However, I'm not going to just ignore it, not in this thread. That's how much I believe in this stuff.:D

Dude, I'm the exact same way. Sorry. If I plug into something and it doesn't knock me out immediately, it's never going to. At this point in my life, my likes and dislikes are pretty much written in stone, and I know immediately what a piece of gear will sound like onstage with my bands. So far, my instincts have been dead on, too. If I have to massage a piece of gear to get what I want out of it, that's too much work for me.

With a title like the evolution revolution who could resist?;)

Someone not prone to take bait?

No offense. It's his OPINION, which is just as allowed as yours that they sound like garbage or the other one that they have no balls. You feel the need to shoot his down and no one is questioning yours. IME very few amps actually do sound like garbage so compared to my experience it's likely an exaggeration on your part or just a simple anti- thing. Which is cool by me as most people tend to see exaggerations or assumptions to be pretty useless. Again, no offense.

:D

No problem, I know many people don't have the same thought process as me.

In my thought process, I take into considderation when I check out something I'm not familiar with that... I'm not familiar with it. That it would make sense on a very basic level to get familiar with it before dismissing it. Can either of us count the times someone's talked about how muddy an LMII is... only to find that they set a couple of basic controls incorrectly due solely to ignorance of the product?
:D

So the problem must've been the amp.
:eyebrow:

I benefit from people not thinking things through all the time. I have people get rid of gear that's potentially great because they wouldn't spend that other half a second trying to figure out what may be at the root of what they're experiencing. Then I get the gear, maybe something like a bass, and do something as simple as set it up and suddenly the garbage bass is a killer. So was the problem with the bass?

Yeah, must've been. For my own sake I should probably stop telling people to actually think things through.

So don't sppnd the time thinking through gear, folks. I'll see you in the classifieds.

It is his opinion which he is entitled to. I took offense when he went after the first person to suggest a different opinion.

To answer your original question, I read the thread because it had the potential to carry new information, which it did in the suggestion to try a MB head with another brand of cab. Until now, I have only played them through MB cabs and did not like the sound. I use a custom cab and am very particular about the sound of it, so it peeked my interest to continue reading the thread.

If I had roadies to hall my gear, I'd certainly like a 100lb tube amp and a bunch of other goodies. However, since I don't, the LMII works very well for me.

I think the point of the OP is, for the average gigging bassist the markbass stuff is a godsend. If you like the tone, that is. If you dont like the tone, there are other options that are lightweight. Not one amp is for everyone, but markbass is popular on TB for good reason.

+1 That's all I was trying to convey. I am a working schmo of a musician. I have limited funds and I am not a young thundercat anymore. So of course I am going to get really excited about something like Markbass. If I could use any amp that I wanted no matter the cost and if I had someone else to move my gear around for me it would more than likely be an Aguilar DB750 that I would be shouting about from the rooftop. I love the tube glow as much as the next bassist, however I will gladly give it up for an amp that weighs 7 or so pounds. The reality is that I have to move my own gear, and as most of the folks here at TalkBass know, it can be just awful moving heavy gear over and over again and when you add stairs or a really lousy load in/load out into the equation it just plain sucks. So I have been waiting for the light gear, waiting a long time. Damn, I am getting older.:bawl:

I apologise for coming off so intensely to some, but I don't post that much around here. I felt I needed to say something about Markbass. I know many others have as well. If it comes off as a broken record, well that wasn't the intention. If you don't want to read about Markbass though, like Brad says, don't open any threads that discuss the subject. What else can be said?:D
