MarloweDK Method & half-rounds vs. Ebonol fretless board?

My half-rounds are dying, and I'm being a cheap bastard and I don't want to put new strings on my fretless with ebonol fingerboard.

I often successfully use the MarloweDK method to prolong the life of my roundwounds on a fretted bass. Here it is for those who are unfamiliar:

Question: if this was your bass, with half-rounds on an ebonol fretless, would you try this method for freshening your strings, taking the chance that you might damage the ebonol fingerboard, or would you go for it?

This trick doesn’t suit everyone, but I’ve done this for years. With rounds on a fretless, I slip one of those really thin, flexible nylon chopping boards between the fingerboard and strings first to protect the ebony.

This will work, but it doesn’t last long. They go dead again pretty quick and you’ll have to repeat the process.

I am aware. And I typically only get about 3 useful treatments before it doesn't help anymore.
