As good a drummer a Pridgen is, I still think Jon Theodore was way better!

I saw them back in 2003, and their live sound was, to say, subpar. The bass, drums, & keys were heard over everything else, but that might have been explained by my close proximity to the stage and the huge subs. But man, I love the Volta, and despite the subpar sound, they put on a great show!

Also true when I saw them live. It was coachella 2003, and there were a lot of bands after them Sonic Youth > Jack Johnson (so out of place on that stage) > White Stripes > Iggy & the Stooges (with Mike Watt on bass) > Chili Peppers

One of the best festival shows ever!

New drummer is solid, but lacks the subtle touch that Theodore brought. Theodore had a great touch for the dynamics of the songs, breaking them down and then building them into a crazy intensity. This new drummer seems young. He's got monster chops and timing, but doesn't have the subtlety that comes with a few years under his belt. All that aside, this didn't take away from when I saw them. I was nothing but impressed with the whole show. I loved how the transitioned into the songs. Reminds me of Phish, but with a much more focused purpose.

I was set to see them this weekend, but it looks like I have to back out. Bummed.

I personally love watching bands progress this way. When they are young and restless and have mad skills and chops, to when they are older and wiser and more subtle, but still just as interesting and mind-blowing. It makes for a great diversity amongst records, IMO.

I saw TMV 2 weeks ago at the detour festival. It blew my mind, I had also heard that there live sound was subpar, some friends of mine had attested to that in 06, but this was not the case - they were on fire. Juan's tone was badass and I have now started to learn the baphomets solo if anyone has some helpful tips for that let me know.
