Marshall JCM 800 / Ampeg cab....WOW

Was sitting around over the weekend and decided to play mix and match with an 80's JCM 800 (50w) and 4 ohm custom Ampeg 15" + 10" from the early 90's (new neo speakers). That guitar amp produced the most heavenly overdrive through that cab using a Lakland Duck Dunn. I was a bit shocked at the outcome and wish that I had the means to record it.

I A/B'd against my trusty berg 215 and old svt. Of course not capable of knocking the plaster off the walls like the big rig, but the JCM had a great overdrive with low end bump that was just amazing. I want THAT sound in a pedal so that I don't temp myself into bringing this to gigs as well and blending it.

More exploration to follow. What other guitar/bass combinations have you guys tried with success or failure???

I just used my (new to me) JCM 800 bass series 50 watt with my Ampeg 810e over the weekend to finish some recordings that have been languishing for a year (a bad DI ground loop pretty much ruined my previous takes, then the computer bit the dust, etc, etc). My recordist/guitarist, Greg, was eager to give it a shot because my Mesa (Bass 400) was eating the crummy drum kit/heads for lunch. Mic'ed with my EV RE20, I'm pretty pleased with the result, which is much better in the midrange for what we need the bass to do. For me, the coolest part was that I could be stuck in a room with the rig for 3 hours and not have massive ear-ringing afterward.

I might have to get the new programmable vt bass and run it through it's paces to see if I can cop that marshall sound..................or just end up spending a lot more time setting up for shows!

Life was easier when I didn't have an SUV to give me options to bring more equipment to gigs. Argh.

Hiwatt DR-103 for bass is great, Spuer lead of course. i have a Traynor YGL-3 MKIII head modded with 4x6550's, it's so sweet for bass. try a Marshall Guv'nor II Plus for marshall grind on the cheap. you can dial in gobs of bottom end and it sounds very Marshally.

I didn't have the 8x10, but I used a 100W Super Lead as a bass amp for years. I'd plug into the "normal" channel, then run a guitar cable from the other jack on that channel to the "bright" channel. Plenty of punch, crunch, grit, and all those other tones you want in a rock band!

It's been languishing since I bought my svt3, but Necrotic's post is making me think of digging it out and giving it a tune-up.
