Marshall Sounding Boxes??

Looking for some Marshall type grind, more JMP than ultra high gain. Seen the Joyo British get a few mentions - does anyone have any experience comparing this the the Tech 21 British, quality etc?

I'm interested what's out there to put in front of an ABM 500 or similar. Anyone try the old Marshall Drivemaster or Guv2?

The Joyo British Sound is a clone of the Tech 21, both cover a broad range of Marshall tones from Plexiglas, Major, JCM, JTM, 45, 800, Guv'nor and more if you hit it with a boost. The trick is in the Character (shape) and gain settings. For the $ it is hard to beat. My other favorite is the DanElectro Daddy O take on the Guv'nor but mine has been tweaked to be more Plexi/Major in a box by Jon B @ ToneCraft.

I think the Joyo is definitely a try out for the cost!

Yep. All you need to do some Marshall pedal “science” on bass.

I play Marshall Bass 8 x 10 stacks. I always have. Nothing else will give you that tone. My advice would be to (what I do) skip the pedals. I use No pedals. Just my bass through a Marshall Bass amp. I have several 50w 100w & 200w Marshall heads. Nothing else will give you that sound. Nothing. You can put more money into a bunch of pedals, than a real Marshall would cost. A real Marshall is the Marshall sound.

A Marshall preamp into a tube amp may give you a different tone that is just as good, though!

I use a Peavey preamp into an Orange-flavored overdrive and they all go into a Mesa Bass 400 with an Eden cab. It rocks!

But a nice tube amp always sounds good(as well as some SS ones that break up nicely)

I’m not saying yours doesn’t sound good. Or, it’s not the sound you’re looking for.
It’s just not the same as a Marshall. That’s the sound I prefer.

Definitely get that. I'm just thinking the OP might find something they like on either route.

My bass overdrive tones have always leaned more "Marshall" than "Ampeg" btw.

People always think of Marshall as an overdriven tone. Not so, unless you want them to be overdriven. That’s one reason I have some 50w, 100w & a 200w Marshall Major. Different amounts of overdrive - or none if you don’t turn up the 200 to make your ears bleed.

What's funny is what most folks think may be a "clean" tone can be pretty dirty within a mix.

Mew's "Glass-Handed Kites" is a great example of a Marshall biamped tone being used and just getting a great bass tone with a Ric. Present and huge, but totally different than the Lemmy thing.

I bought a Tech 21 British character pedal on eBay. I've seen them on Reverb from time to time. It's not a bass specific pedal. I blend it with clean tone with an Xotic X Blender. Great distortion.
