Double Bass MAS 16 review

The 18 is my favorite (in my line) for DB. It's pretty close with the 45. The 18 just makes my bass sound really big, but controlled and punchy. The 18 goes as loud as two 16's, but will get a bit pissed off but won't won't hit the wall as soon as two 16's will. I love the 16. For half of the gigs I play---I use the 16. It weighs 6# less. Which makes a shlep difference when walking 3 blocks downtown.
Everything is finalized now. The crossover is all Duke. I got the best DB sound I've ever gotten with two of them at the Jazz Showcase. I learned from goofing around with them with Mark A. that two of them sound really good with a bit of elevation. Bottom one horizontal.Top one vertical. I could have used one no problem, but the band was really loud and why take chances?
I just played a loud outdoor electric gig with two 18's. Also one of the best sounds I've gotten. No sound of strain with a B string. When Mark heard the 18 the cab wasn't tuned and it was my crossover. Which I thought sounded really nice. But Duke's is better. I've got a guy using eight 18's for pa. Four for subs, two for mains, and two for floor monitors. It goes as low as our 18" subs---obviously not as loud, but four 18's will move 1600 cc's of air.

Is the MAS-18 available for purchase? How, where, when...?

Does anyone own both powered and unpowered 16 or 18s? I ask because I wonder if the form factor is different or if the power module is incorporated into the standard cabinet. I don't know much about how the MVW works but have asked designers about adding a plate amp to their (other) designs and have always been told it's a no-no as anything in the way of air flow is bad and anything taking up space inside the cabinet tampers with the internal volume which is to be avoided.

This is definitely a "check with Mike" thing, but I asked him something similar about one of the cabs (don't remember if it was a 16, 18, or something else) awhile back. I seem to remember him saying that a powered version would be slightly deeper to accommodate the amp. I do know, from other conversations, that airflow is a big deal with the MVW stuff and that Mike and the Big E guys are always looking for ways to optimize it. I don't know what areas are more or less critical for that, though.

There's a nice picture of the MAS 1/8 on Mike's Faceboook page. It's shape is unique.

No kidding..that looks like a floor monitor wedge you might of seen in a '60's TV studio. Not that it's a bad thing.

The 18 is impressive. Two are crazy -- low end is insane -- deep, solid, excellent control. Clear throughout the register and open-sounding -- great with recorded music -- but not as 3D or as subtly magical through the mids as the Bodai 110. I think they'd work great as floor monitors or as a subwoofer-less home theater.

EDIT: Sorry -- thought I was in the big MAS/Big E thread on the EB side -- this post is somewhat redundant with my earlier one re. the 18, a few pages back. I'll let it stand because I could also see using the Bodai 110 as a DB cab -- maybe someone playing loud DB gigs would dig one -- but it's not nearly as small and light as the 18.

I took a look at the specs of the Bodai when it was introduced last year. It sounds amazing but over the additional weight that I want to haul around with a Double Bass.
That's what's so impressive about the 1/6 and 1/8 as they are much lighter.

Totally. Two 18s are still a good deal smaller than the Bodai 110 -- and they'll go louder -- they just don't have that dedicated "vortex chamber" (probably not the right term) for the mid driver. One was impressively loud and full and still quite clear and detailed. The Bodai 110 is cool, but not a lunchbox-style transport like the 16 and 18.

Just read though this thread and bought a powered MAS-16 from a fellow TB member. Just got it today and it sounds incredible through my felix. My only concern and question to other users is that with out the HPF rolled up to about the 12oclock position (~125hz) I can't seem to push the volume too much without the speaker overloading. It stills sounds good but not a great as when the HPF is off and the volume is lower.

I bought this to basically be a stage monitor for myself since I still usually run to FOH but can never seem to get the monitor mix right with the sound people I have been dealing with lately. I just don't want to roll off all the lows to the FOH if I don't have.

Anyone have any thoughts on this?

So the 18 has been said to be as loud as 2-3 16's. It has been said that it will blow any 1x10 out of the water, and will compete with even high end 1x12's. I own a Fearless F110. Will it get as loud or louder and have as much bottom and top (or more) as the F110? It sounds like the ideal cabinet for me but I will not accept anything less than the performance of the F110. Can anyone offer real world experience?

I hear you on that, I have a f112. I don't want to play other speakers now. But I never had tried the MAS speakers yet and people rave about them. I would like to try one sometime.

The 1/8 is a brand new design. Not much information yet.
