Double Bass MAS 16 review

I had a AM/FM clock radio in the 60's that had a 6" speaker.
Was this speaker & cabinet actually designed for actual live gigging with a drummer, pianist, hornist, etc.? I'm befuddled.
Just scratchin' my head.
Thanks.
As long as there is no limitation to certain broadcast frequencies that represent a certain kind of music your AM/FM clock was designed for any kind of music, even if broadcasted live.
So yes, if you can bypass the radio receiver, you can use it for live gigging ... at home.

I bought this to basically be a stage monitor for myself since I still usually run to FOH but can never seem to get the monitor mix right with the sound people I have been dealing with lately. I just don't want to roll off all the lows to the FOH if I don't have.

Anyone have any thoughts on this?

As far as signal to FOH, doesn't the Felix have a pre/post send so that you can use your EQ for your stage cab and then send a pre-eq mix to FOH?

I've also found it hugely beneficial for FOH sound to actually send them the high-passed signal. They can always beef up the low end in the mains if it's needed. This method, I've found, allows the bass to actually be heard better in a louder mix out front because you're not slamming the soundboard with a bunch of high energy low end that will either A. not be addressed or B. cut in a less than favorable way.

That makes sense, So far I have just never sent the FOH a high-passed signal but maybe they were rolling them off anyways! The Felix doesn't have a pre/post eq that I am aware of unless its an internal switch, Maybe ill leaf through the manual again. I will be taking this set up on the road with me for the next couple weeks so I'll see how it sounds through FOH with the lows rolled off. After messing with it for a bit longer I got it to sound great through just the MAS so I would assume that it will still sound good through FOH as well.

So the 18 has been said to be as loud as 2-3 16's. It has been said that it will blow any 1x10 out of the water, and will compete with even high end 1x12's. I own a Fearless F110. Will it get as loud or louder and have as much bottom and top (or more) as the F110? It sounds like the ideal cabinet for me but I will not accept anything less than the performance of the F110. Can anyone offer real world experience?

I can't give my subjective experience due to the rules. I know the f110---I've built 'em. I can give some specs to compare. The 3010lf woofer has a vd (air moved) of 305 cc's. The 3012lf is 496 cc's. The MAS18 is 385 cc's.

The fs of the 3010lf woofer is 39hz. The fs of the custom 8 is 33hz. That's the resonant frquency of the speaker. Typically, reflex bass cabs are tuned in the high 40's. Which means that any information below that frquency will be an unloaded speaker. With reflex cabs (well--any cabs) a HPF is important.So---with a reflex cab you would likely high pass at around 45hz. I like a 33 HPF with mine. My cabs actually don't have any tuning. With mine, the -3db point is typically right at the fs. It then drops like a boat anchor.

As far as the size of the powered speakers---the MAS16 is the exact same size. The powered 18 is 1" deeper than the regular 18. But---the bottom 3" in the back of the 18 is an inch deeper. Then it slants forward and is 1" deeper on the top. The profile remains the same. I've also built some 18's to be used as a powered pa speaker. The only way I could get the pole cup in was to forego the slanting back qnd put the cup in there--as well as the amp. I'll post pics.

Actually, the 1960's clock radios were the design goals of my cabs.

Seriously, folks---the 16 was initially meant as a practice speaker. But I found that it worked great with any drummerless acoustic situation and IMO the limit would be a piano trio with not-loud-drums. Hans Sturm --a great player and teacher--uses a powered 16 with a big band. Oooh--that's kinda pushing it.Eric Hochberg heard him with a medium volume jazz group with drums and Eric said that the 16 sounded great. I'd rather be conservative as far as expectations. I haven't played a situation on upright where a 18 didn't take care of biz.

Gotta say...in the spirit of the Upshot invented by Rick at Acoustic Image, (whose amp I have owned for over ten years and whose business I support )
I have been playing gigs lately with the MAS 16 turned straight up (or as straight as the speakon connecter will allow and man I sure dig it this way. I get to hear with great clarity, and it seems to disperse really musically around the rooms I've played.
