Nah, that was a weak effort. Hardly a catchy tune on their.
These new tunes sound alright, no Remission beaters there though. Could be an alright record, although some of the vocals sound dire. Really shoddy and whiny.
MAJOR Mastodon fan! They have almost single handidly (is that really a word?) renewed my faith in the future of Metal. They have certainly influenced a project of mine for nearly the past two years.
I fully expect this album to be more hard rock/prog directed with the addition of Brendan O'Brien as producer. I have sort of been expecting the Metallica Black album (that's a good thing IMO) and saw an interview with Brent last week where he made reference to this album being Masto's Led Zeppelin 4.

LOG peaked with Ashes of the Wake for me. Everything after that has seemed really lackluster and contrived, such a shame.
I can think of plenty that are worse...New Order, Joy Division, Depeche Mode...for a start!
so any mastodon fans out there?
the only thing I ever heard of them was the bit they did for the cartoon movie - what was it Aqua Deathforce Hunger Strike? (sorry)
anyway, the intro to that had me rollin'.
I'm sure they are a great band, but when you are introduced to something that way, I don't know if I could ever take it seriously.
edit: with mention of Brendan O'Brien, I might have to take a listen when it comes out.
LMAO. My buddy was the guitarist for this band back in NY many many many years ago. These guys have gotten huge. Cool to see. 
I think if a person is taking Mastodon 100% seriously, they might be missing a big part of the fun. Unlike some death/black/stoner/whatever metal, I do believe these guys are in on their own joke.
Mastodon is an awesome band really looking forward to the new album. You can hear moderately crappy live recordings of Ghosts of Karelia and one other on youtube. Gives you a good idea of what the album is gonna sound like.
Mind you, they always do much better in the studio than live. Live, their sound and performance is awful!

NO. That is their best work. I didn't like the melodic singing on Blood Mountain and Leviathan was just ok to me. I mean, how can you beat Crusher Destroyer as an opening track??
The whole album rules. Since then, Leviathan and Blood Mountain have had good moments but they've never been as "blow away awesome" Remission is overall.
