Mastodon Crack The Skye

I thought Scott Kelly from Neurosis was singing the verses on the title track. Sounds a lot like him anyways.
He is. But there are two vocoder sections with Troy as vocals. It sounds robotic
So I finally checked it out...
Underwhelming. The production doesn't really suit the band, and the guitars are just a little too low in the mix to make it really rock. Brendan O'Brien might have been a mistake. The songs are cool, although overall this album doesn't show nearly as much progress as Leviathan and Blood Mountain did. Maybe the mix is just a little too clear and clean...
There were also a couple of times where I was expecting a little extra intensity on the part of the vocals and the guitars and it just didn't appear. Quintessence is a good example: if they'd gotten the mix from The Wolf Is Loose or even March Of The Fire Ants on that song, it would kick all sorts of righteous ass. That section at 1:33 deserves to sound so much stronger...

I agree. The mix seems a bit soft on the first few tracks.
But the last two songs are epic enough to make up for it. I'm really enjoying the bass part in The Last Baron.
But I wouldn't necessarily call this a traditional metal album. It leans way more into the prog side of things. But, it's one of the best damn prog albums I have listened to in a long time. The guys show restraint and taste in their parts vs most other prog stuff these days where it seems as though all they are trying to do is noodle, wank, and play as many notes as possible. These guys don't, and I really enjoy that.

absolutely can't stop listening to it. Mastodon was able to really mature into this album. The best part, I think, is that I can't wait to hear their next album now.

FWIW, I can't stand Between The Buried and Me. They've always just been too wank-y for my taste.
My opinion of Crack The Skye, on the other hand, has totally done a 180%. This record is f'in great! I'm glad I gave it another listen, because, damn, this is sick.

on oblivion? i thought brann was singing the versus, troy on the pre-chorus, and brent on the chorus (with a lot of overdubbed harmonies). i have the downloaded version, so i can't read the notes.
also i don't hear a vocoder at all... what lyrics is it on?

I was going to say something, but then you came around.
To want another Remission, Leviathan or Blood Mountain is silly. Those albums already exist and are excellent. Now you have another to place up there beside them.

Strangely - I reviewed REmission for my college radio station way back - and I hated it.
fast forward to Blood Mountain - and I loved it! I'm a big Machine Head fan (Ashes and on) and mastodon hit that spot.
but I just couldn't stop listening. Then Crack the Skye was announced and I preordered it.
The same week that I was listening to Crack the Skye - I bought Leviathan and now I'm TOTALLY loving Aqua Dementia - and the whole album really.
Perhaps Remission will grow on me. All i can say is - Mastodon IS the missing link between honest technical metal and furthering popular tastes.
I described to my mixing engineer - who has not heard of them and only got interested when I mention Brendan O'Brien did the album -

Mastodon really opened my eyes to "good" music with this album. I seriously think that this is one of the best albums of all time. I am still listening to this album every week atleast and it keeps getting better as I keep listening to it.
It seriously has all the elements that would impress every kind of genre lover! It sounds like a mix of many different genres and it fits so perfectly.
Those songs have such an effect on me, I can listen to this album if I just want to chill and relax on the couch. It has that calming effect like in the beginning of THE CZAR, THE LAST BARON, and CRACK THE SKYE. Very mellow and relaxing, I could fall asleep to these songs.
It still retains the original Mastodon style. Songs like GHOST OF KARELIA, and OBLIVION really emphasize the upbeat and fast Mastodon tracks like Remisson was. So original and so diverse, which has always made Mastodon amazing.
The lyrics and their meanings are sooooo deep and mesmerizing. As said in the dvd, many of the lyrics represent celestial bodies and time travel. Very interesting! I love the space conceptI of OBLIVION as it feels like it is so futuristic and trippy. THE LAST BARON also means soooo much as far as lyrical structure goes. The story is amazing if you google it and the song does a great job showing it. I love the part when they're singing about "floating in the sea" after he was shot down. So deep. Sooo deeeep.
The dvd is the iceing on the cake. Its so interesting that these are just so unique and special guys. They put themelves off as "Normal" guys, but theyre anything but that! They are very talented and special dudes. The dvd shows this and I love the story that goes along with it too.
It feels like they wrote the entire album on acid and unleashed every single emotion they felt and put it into music. This is and always will be my FAVORITE Mastodon album.<3
