Mastodon Crack The Skye

Gotta love when people want to strangle a band's creativity and pigeon-hole them into one defined and unwavering style. They've definitely gotten better with age, drums especially! Personally, I didn't like the hardcore almost screamo-ish kinda vocals on early recordings but they're one of the few bands in the last couple of years who are way ahead of the game.

Anyone who thinks Mastodon is not up to snuff live, check out their DVD The Workhorse Chronicles. Loads of live stuff throughout their whole career. And yes, they do have off nights (maybe Brent's drinking doesn't help), but when they're on, they kill. I saw them back in '03 at the New England Metal fest and they were amazing.

There's an MTV news clip online where Brann explains the concept of the new CD. Essentially, it's a tribute to his sister who committed suicide when he was a teenager.

I agree, they killed at the Mayhem Festival in Denver.

The only live I've seen on Youtube in the Donnington Show... but Brent had a throat infection (& still sang).

Remission is a very different animal when compared to both Leviathan and Blood Mountain.

All around, Remission is some of the heaviest **** EVER, but much less colorful and emotional.

Can Levi or BM offer anything that can top Mother Puncher or Tainwreck? Hellz no. But Remission can't come close to touching Megalodon, Aqua Dementia or Capillarian Crest.

It all just rules.

^ completely backed.

i love all of mastodons stuff, lifesblood and all. i think its all great. each album has its own distinct sound, which is kool imo so not everything sounds the same, but it still has that mastodon sound.

but crack the skye, srsly i think it is amazing. it has so much going on in each song but not too much that it is overwhelming. The singing on the album is rly good, and pree much all the vocal parts are soo catchy ive had the chorus for crack the skye stuck in my head since the album came out. (well since the album leaked)

very good album, i may even prefer it over the new cannibal corpse album evisceration plague

+1

Everyone who downloads music and then admits it on the internet always says "Oh, but then I always buy the cd too".

Yeah right.

In my case its true. Downloading has become an excellent and more effective way to pre-listen to a record to see if I like it or not. I love that I dont have to stand in the shop with earphones listening through albums anymore.

Even before the internet I would borrow records or tape them so I could give them a good listen before I bought them.

I dont want to buy the "record in the box" ;)
