I can't tell if I'm G.A.S.-less or just growing up more but I've been scouring the amp and bass classifieds with nothing speaking to me. My wonderful grandmother has offered to buy a bass (or gear item) for me or helping on the price as a college graduation gift.

The thing is, I've already got an American Jazz that's survived the purchase (and sale) of every other bass I've ever owned. Its the only one I have and I've been looking at used '62 avri's but even those aren't jumping at me. Once upon a time I desperately wanted an Aggie 750. Not feeling it much anymore.

Whatever it may be I want it to be something that'll stay with me for the rest of my life. I don't want "just another" piece of gear. I'm just drawing a serious blank.

It is and I'm very fortunate to have the supportive family I have. The only time constraint is to pick something before May since itd be in poor taste to expect her to just hang onto money forever when she might want to buy something herself

Shes sort of always kept my music at an arms length and just recently came around to my pursuit of it. The point of this thread was precisely to avoid just frivolously buying a bass. I just don't want to be rude about her gift offer by being indecisive

If I'm being honest i did originally think hand stained P, but I've been through so many p basses that I'm giving up. My hands dont fit them. I desperately wanted to keep my roadworn p but it literally hurts to play

Well I know what I love (traynor, ampeg, fender, aguilar, GK) but amps are pretty personal... what with some having baked-in sounds some people love and others don't, etc. If you love your head and aren't gigging enough to warrant needing a backup, what about improving your cab situation? I LOVE my 4ohm Traynor TC1510 (2x10" 1x15") but at 90 lbs, I'm really excited for the day I can trade for two 8 ohms (a 2x10 and a 1x15). They're around 40 lbs each so much easier to load, plus for practice or smaller venues I can just bother with one.

I understand. I've got my current dream rig of an Aguilar AG500sc through two Aguilar db112's. at the end of the day i suppose it just comes to me trying out some gear on my own.

I loved some of the 62 AVRIs I played prior to their being discontinued. I think they have a fabulous neck profile, and the stack nobs are stylish. I'd get that bass. If you can find it used for $1100 or $1200 it should hold its value (although nitro finishes do wear down somewhat quickly, which could cause devaluation).
This will allow you to accept your grandmother's gracious offer by getting a bass you already find agreeable, one which you will likely find time to play (or record), and can flip or sell later if necessary, but will more likely come to treasure over time as a keepsake from your gran.

IMHO, being partial has a tendency to limit the opportunities to new and exciting experiences. I never thought I would get a PRS or a Korean made SE. After playing an SE Kestrel that was properly setup, I found what I liked.

A Jazz bass neck on an American P-bass body sounds like a great fit for you. I'd look at the Fender American Design Experience. You can put together P body, a Jazz neck, pick your hardware and finish. You can even get an engraved neck plate with your name on it.
