Hoolicat. Your first post was 8-11 where you said you were new to bass. You have to realize there are hundreds of guys here from all levels of experience. Many are well experienced pros and semi- pros and many more very serious intermediates from all genres. You sort of went into a pro ball locker romm and yelled baseball is for sissys! LOL.

It's not a crime to be young but respect goes a long way....

New, new to bass

Hey there, I'm new to these forums, and to the bass. I wanted to play bass for years, but just never had the extra money laying around to get set up. I recently got a ESP LTD B-50 at auction for $70, and loaded her with some Ernie Ball Power Slinky bass strings. From what I've read, the B-50 is a pretty good starter bass. :smug:

I don't love Fender either, but that is because A) I don't like how they fit me, and B) I don't like how they look. I like the way a J sounds (when wielded by particular individuals). If they felt a lot better, I wouldn't mind the look as much. But every time I play one, my hands cramp up.

The fact is, there are just better instruments for me to be playing...like ones that don't make me want to stop playing.

I also NEVER had a Fender of any kind in my house, does that make me a bad guy, a terrible musician, or ignorant because I wont buy one ever?... to some probably so...to others probably not... I also get tired of the "you don't know what your missing unless you own and play a Fender" and "so-and-so from xxxx-band plays one and to be like him, you HAVE to play one" attitude your gonna get from the Fender-Fan-Boys, but fortunately after 30-40 years of companies making alternatives, there is no NEED for me to flash a Fender Badge in my monthly gigs to prove something to somebody when all my other units have never let me down.

in a debate like this, it's a 50-50 shot your gonna get flamed, or real reasons some folks do not like Fenders the same as anyone starting a thread why the OP's reasons he/she does not like that particular brand. Go into the xxx club and say the same thing you did here, and you'll get the same replies from the XXX-fans.

You know the cool thing about opinions? Especially online, you can keep them to yourself. Obviously you have noted there are a lot of people who dig fenders as with your title "maybe it's just me..." so when did the thought of "hey this is a good idea" to post a thread calling basses that so many people own ugly,and crappy cross your mind?

Funny you could say a fender sounds bad when you have an ESP B-50 which has a PRECISION and JAZZ pickup in it.

Probably don't like/understand fenders because you've never played them in a band.

^ Exactly this, There are quite few basses out that that i think are fugly but I'll keep that to myself because that is just the way I was brought up by my parents.... "if you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all"..... it's ok to not like some big t*ttied, crooked teeth, walks with a limp over weight woman, just don't tell her 6' 7" 355 lbs. boyfriend that she is ugly.... get the point?

Personally I think the fender fans hear are taking this all to seriously. I feel like just doesnt want to feel on his own, thats a perfectly valid feeling to have, were all human. and I'm going to second him, fenders are kind of ugly. More to the point I think there shape is unimpressive and for me there are basses that are much more comfortable.
As far as sound goes, I have found the sound I wanted in cheaper basses, thats just preference, though if I were playing more jazz in my band I would want a fender jazz fretless.

My point exactly. It just seemed that the thread was made to get the Fender fans off their asses.

I don't see the reason for saying what you don't like. That isn't very useful.

I say we could all tell each other what instruments we enjoy.

If OP wanted to find others that feel like him he could start a thread that salutes ESP basses. That might inspire others to try instead of start defending Fender.

This is after all a forum for bassists. We should be sharing knowledge that will benefit each other.

Just my opinion.

Well, whatever rocks your boat OP, personally I hate the looks of the basses you seem to love. I hate those modern sharp contours and finishes. It's only (mostly) vintage Fender for me. Same with the sound. Only passive P or J.

And about your soft rock/pop reference: the basses you choose are far more pop to me, since they were the big thing back with the "wedding bands" & "pop crap cover trash bands" since the 80s.

If your main problem with them is their sound, you must must not like the sound of the bass on ~90% (conservativley) of recordings. Easily that many recordings are played on SOME kind of Fender bass. I can understand the aesthetics, feel, etc. But the sound? Very nearly every pickup system on the planet emulates some kind of Fender. Even ESP/Ibanez soapbars and the like. If you hate the sound of Fenders as a brand, I don't understand how you can enjoy the sound of any bass.
