Bari saxist, Bruce Johnstone, who founded the band, lives down I-86 from me and teaches at SUNY Fredonia. I gig with him occasionally. Great guy and player. He has great stories too. I believe there is a link to a MF forum on Maynard's fan page. Should be lots of info about personnel. Also, there's an interview with Rick Petrone and what he ended doing after MF and NY Mary.

I can throw another name in the pot: Craig Butterfield, now Dr. Butterfield. I'm one of his alumni bass students, as he teaches at USC School of Music. He plays both bs gtr and dbl bs, and he was in Maynard's touring band for a stint. Maybe he's your guy?

Dave Carpenter? I saw him that same time period, and it was Dave. He blew me away.

I saw that kid play with MF, also, in 82-81-82, at the Nor Shore, in Duuth, MN. He was only 16-18 and, if memory serves me, black. I was 19, college soph, and he was younger than me. We talked to him during intermission or after the gig. I've tried to research him over the years, without success.
I saw Maynard Ferguson around the same time, 1983 or so, and it was a young Steve Bailey on bass.
Definitely not Victor Bailey. He and Steve are easily distinguishable from each other.
My dad was a huge fan.....In the 70's got to see Erskine, and the last time was in the 80's and I'm sure it was Chad Wackerman and Matt Bissonette.

I remember playing a few Maynard songs in high school jazz band. Our director was obsessed with big band stuff lso this was a wonderful compromise for my funky younger self
I just meant that I'd never heard anything about Chad Wackerman ever having played with Ferguson's band before...his stint with Watrous' band seems far more conspicuously documented.
Hey Jerry, just saw your mention of Rick Petrone; sure brought back memories:
I grew up in Stamford, Ct; Rick and drummer Joe Costello were locals, and were friends with my music teacher, Tony Truglia at Rippowam HS.
Between 1970-72, the two of them did a couple music clinics for our class, one accompanying pianist Marian Mac Partland.
I also remember watching New York Mary, probably a few years later, somewhere in Stamford: might even have been at Rippowam for a later group of students.
Rick DJ’d the local jazz station for a while;
Joe Costello became a Stamford police officer , so that he’d have more financial stability, but continued to play professionally.
An amazing rhythm section!!!
