was searching for info about both these amps, and whaddya know, they show up in a Tbowlus shootout, where TB once again pays for itself.
I tried to find the answer but couldn't find it so far so I'm sorry if this is a repeat question.
Can I use the power section of my GK MB800F (or a general power amp) with the pre section of a Walkabout 1st gen?

So there's no issues with the effects loop in a Walkabout 1st gen? That was my main concern because I think I read it somewhere but never mind if it's not true...

fwiw; a lot of the walkabout mojo comes from the tube that drives the mosfets.

no "issues" other than sometimes the jacks oxidize and cause problems. deoxit is a quick fix. not a big deal.
mesa can update earlier models to add an fx bypass switch, and, and active/passive input and whatever other updates have transpired since.

The corrosion of effects return internal contacts (usually unused jacks) is common to any make amp with a serial effects loop, not just Mesa, any manufacturer.
You may also want to try running the Walkalbout's DI out into the effects return on the GK. That way you get both tubes.
Wicked never thought of that!! So will this get me the tubes that run the mosfets in the WA + the GK Power?
I don't believe the signal will be strong enough from the DI to run any power amp fully. The effects send (or preamp out) should be all tubes and stages from any preamp.
The MOSFET Driver Tube in the Walkabout is after the effects loop but before the DI out.
I tried this with my 1001RB and Walkabout and it did work, but I did only try it at home volumes.
What sonic benefit would expect to gain from an impedance matching stage? Other than two more opamps to change the impedance back to a higher impedance.
Great review Tom and great thread TB longtimers... count me in too for a Walkabout with 3X headroom. I tried two MP 600s hoping for the sound of a high-powered Walkabout. In the meantime, I'm getting a Subway D800... and I'm looking forward to your review Tom and maybe a comparison of the Walkabout and the Subway.
You got me there, but there is a difference in sound. When I get around to it, I'll hook it up to my scope to see if what I heard was psychosomatic.
