Oranges, hands down.
I love them both, but Paul is the better bass player.
The better songwriter, too.
Sting... Definitely Sting. His live album All This Time is amazing; it's transcending at an empirical level - which is odd, since saying that doesn't really make sense. But that's how it makes me feel... Simple, yet awe-inspiring.
If I ever get a chance d-wn-oad "All this Time" I will.

McCartney. Hands down. More influential and a more melodic bass player, which in my books is key.
This thread is inspiring me to go transcribe tons of Beatles and Police songs. I'd rather go woodshed and learn from them than sit here in this sandbox and argue about who has the better "Tonka truck."
paul paul paul paul paul. the man is simply a genius. has there EVER been ANYONE with a keener ability to underscore the melody of a song with his bass playing? if not for him, the beatles wouldn't have accomplished half as much as they did. if you listen closely to beatles songs, you'll realize that, more often than not, its his phenomenal basslines that make so many of their songs so irresistibly catchy. paul, hands down. sting was good, but paul is a bona fide GOD of music.
Love them both, but the nod goes to Paul - I think he was much more versatile than Sting, and he was a true pioneer.
As somebody who's very recently had to do a Beatles 101 for my covers gig, I'll say that Sir Paul wrote some fiendishly involved basslines. So many subtle variations on the recordings that it's very hard to do him justice 
In contrast, I've been able to pick up most Police songs and make them sound good very quickly.
Either way, learning as many songs by both artists as you can is a sure-fire way of improving your chops

Both are good bass player whose lines fit whatever song perfect. I like Sting his lines are more rhythmic.
