Measurements of rumble 500 not adding up

Something is off somewhere. Either the wiki is outdated or fender changed something.


This is what I get all knobs at noon using either pink noise or sweeps

I promise I'm not being a troll when I ask this. I am genuinely wondering about it.
Around here, you often see the opinion that one should make choices about bass gear "with the ears, not the eyes."
So, I understand curiosity, but what is the *practical* reason for using a visual tool to determine an amp's flat setting?
And, if you're like me, the "flat setting" is the tone that I hear in my head -- my personal "voice" -- and I twist knobs to achieve *that* "flat setting" in whatever venue I'm playing.
Again, I'm being serious. I truly don't understand. Not trying to argue.

None really, but if you know flat and know the built in eq curves of other amps, you can use the flat settings as a starting point to achieve other amps curves.

That can be useful for easily getting closer to a certian sound.
For instance now that I know the fenders eq curve, if I were to use a regular amp, i could dial in the fender curve pretty easily with a decent eq.

It can just take a little of the guess work out of things.

Also live, in a band setting, "starting" near flat has benefits. The built in eq curve sounds lovely in the bedroom, but you'll need a flatter sound live to cut through. Trying to run a scooped sound live rarely works unless you have tons of output to spare. Being able to quickly dial the amp flat then adjust for the room/mix can make life easier.

But you're right. You "can" do it all with your ears.

But you're right. You "can" do it all with your ears.

What about the amps that are voiced around live gigging, specifically to fit into a "big mix"? How would flat help anybody with this in mind? I assure you that many amps are not voiced to sound good in a bedroom.

I didn't assume or even imply that all amps were voiced in a similar way.
I swear you read what you want to read. You take basic words and twist them into something they never were.
I gave a couple of hypothetical resons to enable to know an amps flat settings and you tunened it into something else completely. Carry on.

OP, you have learned an important lesson about scaling with a spectrum analyzer. Hats off to you for discovering this.
Being able to match the EQ of a particular amp is a useful goal, particularly when in a recording studio. An acoustically dead room will allow the use of EQ adjustment and effects pedals to produce a very specific sound. Likewise, being able to start with a known (flat) response curve may ease adjusting your EQ for a live gig.

You mention taking the response from your speaker. Was this done by measuring the electrical signal across the speaker terminals or using a dedicated microphone?

When playing a live gig, there are many factors that influence what is actually heard by an audience. A sound check beforehand with a microphone designed for this purpose will help. That will ensure that you achieve a particular sound at the spot in the room where the microphone was placed. However, the number of people in a room can vary. Doors may be opened of closed. Even other instruments used by the band can generate acoustic waves that reduce or accentuate certain frequencies. These uncontrollable influences will temper the desired result of a flat EQ.

As previously asked, what is the purpose for matching the EQ of a particular amplifier, to achieve a specific sound or to produce a sound that is most pleasing to you (a very subjective goal)?

Several TB members have extensive experience with live sound and can suggest options for you, if live sound control is your aim. Similarly, others have studio experience that can be shared with you. I suggest that you ask specific questions with your goal(s) in mind.

You put things out there as facts. Like in the Rumble thread. Just to learn you weren't correct. Seems you're grasping at straws just to make a post.
You say you're trying peoples suggestions, then regurgitate things that don't comply.
Be thankful for the people that do know and learn from it. I do.

Which implies that all amps are scooped and have bedroom eq curves... I was pointing out that you are NOT correct in this line of thinking either. Many amps are very much focused on the live "in the mix" performance. Not just amps I designed, but virtually all of GK's and Ampeg's success was based upon this very concept.
