Meazzi Hollywood (referenced) project

What's the full name of that FGM color? I really like it for my next project, but tried to google it and ended up deeply disturbed by reports on Female Genital Mutilation practices.

Firemist Gold Metallic - Lucite Dupont 4579L/Ditzler 22422

Replaced Shoreline Gold in 1965 (Shoreline is more muted and leans towards brown while Firemist leans more yellow and is brighter - I prefer Firemist personally)

7lbs/13oz - medium scale - well balanced - very tonally harmonic. Only setting that isn't producing the desired change/effect is the push-pull tone pot "fuzz" cap, so a bit more trouble-shooting.

Apparently that 'fuzz' cap is working but being passive (no battery boost) and being only a capacitor, it's fairly subtle. I think it would be more effective in a guitar. In the 'series' setting it creates 'dirt', but not what I would call 'fuzz'. So 'dirtying up' the tone could come in handy depending on the need, but I was hoping for 'fuzz'. Oh well, I don't want a battery involved, so it is what it is.

Serek offers a built-in passive fuzz, but I can't find a pic of their electronics or have I heard how it sounds. If anyone has a Serek with the fuzz option - I'd appreciate a detailed pic of the harness.

So I decided the Underdrive 'fuzz' cap wasn't worth having a push-pull pot for it (since it doesn't do much of anything), so I ordered a ToneStyler Bass 6. They have one that goes to... 11, but it's quite a bit more $ and 6 tone variables should be sufficient. I had one in a bass and it has a good variety of tones.

I've got one in a small pedal. Really like it. I kind of wish it indicated the value of each capacitor as it would then be a great way to test different capacitors on different basses for conventional installations. Some basses do seem to 'like' certain settings more than others. Cool device as is still the same!

Yeah, I have one I made in my old EB-0 clone, works nice; better than a tone pot in my opinion.

The passive fuzz relies on getting the signal voltage high enough to exceed the 'on' voltage of a diode to get clipping -- difficult to do with some pickups. With the pickups in series, you can get there more easily. You might get more of an effect with a diode with a lower 'on' voltage. This instructable talks about making a circuit like this.

@JIO if you want a passive distortion circuit I’ve made one with (2) 1N34A diodes. Let me know if you want to try. That number came from old guy memory. I can verify when I get home. Just wire the diodes in “opposite” directions like you would in a fuzz pedal then attach just like you would a capacitor in a tone control. A friend looked up the specs on those diodes years ago after I told him about that circuit and he said they were kind of odd. They’re maybe the only diodes that will clip at passive pickup voltages. You get some volume drop if you turn the distortion all the way up but, depending on the application, it can sound good at lower settings.

Yeah, 1n34a's would work; the voltage drop is about 0.3V, also the BAT-46 would work with a voltage drop of around 0.25V.

Interesting - when you get a chance could you draw a diagram of it? I'm set on the ToneStyler pot but I might be able to work it in somehow.

I couldn’t find my old sheet on it but here’s a picture and an article. I have not tried the 4 diode version. Might have to do that…

He doesn’t mention specific diodes in the article but the 1n34a will work and the one @Jon Clegg mentioned probably will to. You should be able to replace one of the caps on the DIY tonestyler with the diodes or parallel them with a cap. Experiment with what sounds best to you.
