Medium scale issue with TI flats

Installed them on a medium scale bass (32"). E string completely dull and unbearably muddy when moving up the fretboard. The remaining strings played and sounded great. I re-installed the E string with no improvement on the sound.

I transferred the set to a JMJ (string through) Mustang. Most of the dullness is gone, all strings sound like TI's and the E string sounds as it should when played up the fretboard.

Curiously, all the strings now feel significantly tighter on the JMJ, almost like the original Fender strings it came with. Too much tension for the current state of my plucking hand. Any ideas on what may be going on?

Thank you.
