The only thing that vexes me about that Adler is why it wasn't made headless. Seems like it would be textbook definition of neck dive.

yep- that's where i scanned it from.
the first Schack 10 was built for Jonas Hellborg.

The 10 string Shack was not built specificly for Hellborg.it was originaly built for the European NAMM show in Germany.Hellborg checked it out and felt comfortable with it and Shack was Impressed with his Talents on it and simply gave it to him.

was it built to celebrate 10years of Schack basses or something? I might dig out the old issue of Bassist that mentions this.

Assuming a bass tuned to fourths, I think 11 or 12 may be the limit. I believe the 11, tuned low to high, would be C#F#BEADGCFBbEb. If you go a fourth lower, you're below the range of human hearing (actually, I think the C# is lower than most). The high Eb is only half step below the high E on a guitar. You could go a fourth higher, but it would require some extreme fanning of the frets to get the scale short enough that the string wouldn't snap.

Of course, there's some wiseass out there that's going to build a 47 string bass, tuned to fourths, nothing doubled, just to prove me wrong.

I think you may be right on both counts. Aside from the strings snapping, there is only so wide a neck that can actually be played on using conventional technique. That goes for the right and left hand. I suppose you could use thumb position or play overhanded with the left hand. And you would need a really big scruncci (hope I spelled it right) to mute the strings. That and you would have to mute with the forearm. I guess I just justified the 47 string. Someone will make it happen. And they'll be saying Gary Goodman only needed 11 strings. B Easy

Remember the guy who said he was in contact with Warrior to have a doubleneck FOURTEEN strings built, non-doubled? Someone here quoted him in his sig, but I can't remember who... Darn, even John Turner found the idea was silly!

With a neck that large, wouldn't it be more like "body dive" than neck dive?
