Melodic vs Harmonic minor - Solar

How do I decide between harmonic and melodic minor on that CMaj/min in Solar?
I read it’s supposed to be melodic… and I can use my ears. But when this choice arises in a jam situation (ie reading a chart cold) - what are my signposts and why?

(BTW I started going to jazz jams back in August. Two a week here. People have been really welcoming. It’s been terrifying, huge fun, exhilarating - and definitely helping me improve. Especially since my teacher’s in the house band! Onward!)

The only "rule" is that your scale should contain the notes C Eb G B (1 b3 5 7)
In jazz, minor scales with a natural 6 are usually the go-to. (Dorian, melodic minor)
The difference between the scales is flat vs natural A (6th)

Look at the accidentals in the melody for a clue to what may clash
Looking at the score, there a a lot of A natural, pointing to C melodic minor

That said, you re not obligated to play or think in terms of a scale/mode
- play the chord tones & "other" tones
- choose "other" tones that don't clash with the melody
- allow your ears to guide you

Those should not be thought of as mutually exclusive scenarios. One is never "reading a chart cold" without using one's ears in real time.

Actually, since tonight’s jam is on a brewery patio with minimal heating, and it’s 40F, I really am reading charts absolutely freezing!
But I take your point.
