So Santa was cool enough to stop by my house last night. He brought a B stock ibanez btb1406. It was only 950, including case. I adore this bass! It's beyond anything I thought I'd ever own. The finish is perfect( can't find the flaw that made it b stock). The sound is way "cleaner" than my fender jazz, or I suppose modern is the right term. The set up was just fine out of the box. If you ask me, it's one of the most beautiful basses I've seen. It's been way easier to adjust from 4 to 6 than I thought it would be. I'm still finding myself slip up every now and then, but I can play the songs I already knew with little to no hesitation. I've been really into tapping lately, and this thing sounds amazing for it, I actually prefer the passive tones to the active. With the 17.5mm spacing I find myself moving way faster up and down across the strings. Anyway, sorry for the jumbled up thoughts, in just excited about this bass! I hope everyone has a merry Christmas.
This 3 P body I snagged off eBay: I'm thinking of trying an Aero in the neck, Nordstrand in the middle, not sure about the bridge, maybe a Aquilar. Putting a 5 string neck on it, all birdseye, with black hardware - just ordered the Hipshot A 5 string Ghost loaded bridge. Edit: Delano's in the running if it'll fit too. Wondering even if I could do the wiring with 3 mini sockets/plugs and mount the pickups with foam and velcro rather than screws, allowing for quick swaps to see what sounds best where - someone surely makes something like that?
That sounds interesting! I have no experience with any other nordy's, but I've heard they provide a more modern take on the traditional P sound (depending on model), so maybe you'd want something more traditional in the center and go for the modern at the bridge. But the quick swap idea is really cool, I like it.
I'm not really looking for "traditional" vs. "modern", more that I want something that has lots of sound options and doesn't sound like the rest of the herd.
Do it! I'd always read how awkward the transition is, but it has only been a few hours and I'm at least semi-comfortable on it.
I just went from 4-5 string last month. The transition was easy. First rehearsal was a tad awkward but I felt 100% by the last 30 min of rehearsal. Now it feels normal. A four string feels like a pencil. I worry that the 6-string will be TOO awkward.
