Mesa/Boogie Official Club Thread...Part #2

I used a 400+ thru my Berg NV425 for around 4 years and it's an incredible combination. The ONLY reason I traded it for the Titan V12 was for two reasons...

1. I was simply ready for another "flavor".

2. I wanted to go a bit louder without such an extreme breakup.

I got what I wished for at extreme volumes, but at reasonable volumes, the 400+ just can't be beat. So thick n full of that tubey goodness so many of us love. It really is a shame they discontinued it.

I can't wait to hear what you think about it, especially compared to your previously owned Titan. Congrats:bassist:

Just hopped up to the shipping dept to pick up my used PH112. It is actually lighter than spec'd on their site (47.5 lbs including the terrible packing and box-likely under 45 lbs) and somehow smaller than I expected-ridiculolusly small height-I hope the extra depth and ports result in a decent tuning...

it's not a terribly deep sounding box, but it has great punch and cut

Got home and plugged the WA into the PH112. Very pleasing in the relatively meaningless context of playin' wit' mah own self-player control network set on highest crossover setting. Pales in comparison the the LDS 15/6 but may make a nice crown for it.

BUT-ugly whistling when playing low E and below is caused by air escaping through the unused 1/4" jack!!! I stuffed it with a 1/4" adapter and it sounds perfect but any Rube-Goldberg suggestions on what would be easier to use and not protrude from the faceplate would be appreciated.

Yeah I will definitely give it a thorough run-through! I've been playing and tracking a lot recently so I haven't had much GAS, BUT, the 400+ is really the only big-name amp out there I've never owned or really tried (not just including Mesa) and actually am pretty content with the BB750, but hey, what can ya do! :D

I really just need a crushing amp with a little breakup for my current band and I think the 400+ should do that nicely. After spending more time with the 750, I can even tell the differences between that and the Titan, so yeah- purrrrty psyched to get this bad boy in! :bassist::bassist::bassist: I think my NS' and then the Berg of course are going to be epic matches. I keep hearing how the NV's really need a tube amp to maximize their tonality, and I've only played SS and hybrids through them and they've been zomg amazing, so that's like getting half of a new cab at the same time, right? ;)

I am lucky enough to have both and you are spot on.
I push the 400+ through 1 diesel cab (w/3015) just so I can get a little more breakup sooner when I want that type of sound, the Titan sounds awesome at ALL volumes, esp. through the PH412!

Just picked up a MESA Titan V12 to replace my BigBlock 750. Soooo many more options with the Titan it's not funny. It could be just me, but I think the Titan doesn't sound exactly like the BigBlock even though it's reported it's effectively 2 BigBlock preamps packaged together.

Now I can can an effective clean, overdrive, and heavy OD/fuzz sound out of just the amp. No pedal board required for basic dirt which is all I normally use anyway. I probably wouldn't have bought the Titan if I was a heavy pedal board user as I'm not sure the extra channels and options would be useful VS just pushing dirt/boost/mute/etc via separate pedals. But for someone that just wants an amp and dirt this seems like the ticket.

I got my Titan a few months ago :D and you are spot on about what you said about the pedals-ie,I used to like the sound of the VT1 pedal but this amp does that sound without all the buzzing. tamp is a wildly exotic beast in its tonal possibilities, its headroom( I've never heard a louder 1200 watt amp), and flexibility, as far as having two channels set and ready to go...ie, 1 channel set for my MTD Z4 fretted 4 string, and one set up for my Fretless Spector Spectorcore 4 ...Peace...DAcat :cool:

I've got my 400+ with new power tubes running through a couple of Eden 2-10 cabs right now. The 400+ sounded really strong and full tonight at rehearsal. See my avatar. Can I have a number please.

I need a new SKB rack for the 400+ -- the front and back won't stay latched. Do they make 4-space racks with the side cut where the fan is. Or perhaps the previous owner did that...

skb will send you replacement parts...sometimes they'll send you a whole new case.
i've had both results when calling customer service and explaining my latches were dead.

Muahahaha!! This baby is totally and fully pristine. There isn't a scratch on the casing, and it's never been even racked before!

It also sounds just stupid good. I've never ever liked a tube amp before, but this just kills. It doesn't have the typical characteristics of other tube maps I've played/owned. Even compared to the BB750, it still feels very quick and immediate. Plus the natural breakup is just heaven! I think I need to replace the pre tubes at some point b/c I have Channel 1 at like 8.5, and only get a lil bit of breakup, which isn't bad as I also use pedals, but man yeah- that character and just OOMPH is right there, without it feeling artificial. At really loud levels it keeps the whole thing together very much like the V12 I used to have, whereas the 750 kinda likes to lose some of it's character as you reach around 12:00 on the Master. Yes, that's extremely loud, but, I'm just sayin'. ;)
I haven't popped the top and checked what pre tubes are in it, but I'm guessing it's all stock as this was one of the late model runs they made before shutting down the line.
Also does anyone run both Input 1 AND 2 at the same time!?? :hyper: I think that'd be awesome if it works! :) What about EQ points? Is it the "Fender style" with the 10/2/10 at flat? I think I have it set Treble:4, Bass:7, Middle:4, and I love where that gets me right now, but just curious. No pull-shifts just yet. I'm still learning!
Can't wait to practice with again tomorrow. I have a few shows coming up next month that I'll probably keep the BB750 around fer just b/c I know it's reliable and these are our first 2 shows in the area, so don't want any even possibility of hiccup!

I'll give some better A/B/C reviews of it to the 750 and what I recall about the V12 once I get a few more hours outta it. :cool:

MESA Titan added to my bass rig. Note that a black faced KORG DTR-2000 is a perfect color cordinated match for the Titan and it's lights.

Recording rig/practice PA (use the laptop and recording interface for a PA powered through the 7lb Peavey IPR) is plopped on top of my bass rig.
