Lomo/Chef/Rod - thanks again for tall the info. I have to say, though I hate the thought of of not having a "DI output free" volume adjustment, the Walkabout sounds killer enough to warrant an attempt.

Rest easy Rod, I won't be using both inputs simultaneously. I just like to have a two input low/high configuration for gigs where I use two basses (there are a number of those). If the DI thing becomes an issue, I'll just bring one to the gig.

fwiw, I never, ever use the active input, even with high gain active basses.
They don't make the amp clip any earlier, and I feel the active input setting is a major tone killer.

Thanks Chef, I'll take that onboard. Having said that - it was not evident when running my rob Allen through it yesterday. I will listen more carefully at the final demo though.

Chef, When I eq the 5'r and get the B string sounding the way I want it. The E sounds a little thin. I haven't had the 5 for very long so I'll say that it may be some operator error. And the B string comes from a diff mfg'r than the rest. That's the way it came to me. Elixer strings E-G and a DR taper wound B.
As far as the DI goes. I could see starting @ 9 o'clock and not running into a problem at all. 12 is too hot for some boards that don't have a pad at the inputs like some of the Soundcraft boards. The bottom line is though. The quality of the DI from the WA is second to none. The comments from the techs and engineers reflect that.

Just got a used Mesa Walkabout. It is the silver burgundy version and has both active and passive input jacks.
"Of course" it has the effects loop issue.
Further there is a black pot on the back panel.
The previous owner stated this was to level the effects loop.
Is this true? I have found no documentation about this online?

I finally got my two SVT210AV's to use with my WalkAbout!

I have this combo and like the sound a lot--quite punchy. I find I need to dial in a little extra bass with those little boxes. Only thing I don't like is the way the WA sits on top (hangs off the back)--might be a little dicey for a rowdy gig.

if it has the fx bypass switch, maybe not. try bypass mode
if it does not have the switch, and/or has two input jacks (versus one input, and an active/passive switch); those earlier jacks were prone to oxidization problems, and singla loss.
cleaning inputs and fx jacks with deoxit, and running a patch cable across the fx loop might fix you.

if yours has two input jacks, and no fx bypass switch a mesa service center can make those upgrades to your unti for about $150, IIRC
