Makes sense - fatter is better with a trio generally speaking.

Thanks to all for the input so far, I'm getting a pretty good sense of what the WA is all about. I'm not really into the glassy/sheeny/uber hifi thing - I like a little fat on my beef, thank you. Will definitely be checking one of these out.

I've posted this before, regarding the fan noise, but I'll repeat it for the benefit of the newcomers:

The same friend who convinced me to buy a Walkabout asked me later if the fan noise bothered me. I told him, no, I had not noticed any. He said his was too loud to be tolerated I promised to find the information on a quieter fan, which I did, and got the brand and part number to him.

A couple of weeks later, I ran into him again and asked how the fan upgrade had fared. He gave me a sheepish grin, and said, that after he had told another member of his jazz band about his complaint, the guy told him he wasn't playing loudly enough!

Problem solved.:D

Last friday I had the first opportunity to hear my WA while not playing. Coffee House type venue w/about 120 people. Other than my Jazz there was a P, an acoustic and an upright with the different acts. Super impressed.
And if anyone has any concerns about the quality of the build of a WA. On my way to the gig I was T-boned which sent me into another vehicle and then into a hydro pole. The WA was in my back seat of my Intrepid along with my bass.(Had to have my buddy come and get my gear. Car was totaled) The WA was perfectly fine. And so was my bass.
I would like to try a AE210 or 410 though. One can't have too many cabs can ya?

Wow! I guess you were unlucky & lucky all at once. Glad you & yr gear were ok.

Okay, one more question before I take the plunge... I read way back in Part 1 (I think I read it anyway) that the DI output level is controlled by the master volume. Is that correct? Doesn't make any sense, ESPECIALLY when there is a DI output control right beside it on the control panel. Is this true? If so, anybody experienced any complications on the gig?

Seems kinda dumb... :confused:

The DI has its' own volume, but is also affected by master volume. If you adjust your master significantly during a gig this might be a problem for you.

DI is post-everything, even the output gain.

There is a mod so you can make it per-output gain, but MESA say it affects the tone.

Lomo... the WA sounded fantastic. The upright bassist said it's the best his bass had ever sounded and is now looking for a WA. It was so full sounding and the clarity of each note was superb. The tone of the early '70's P made my jeans fit funny. And of course my MM Jazz IV sounds amazing thru it. To note though in case anyone is thinking M.M. tone. I bought that bass for the playability, not the tone. I use TI flats and have loaded it with DiMarzio DP123's and an Audere pre-amp. It is the nicest playing and sounding bass I've ever owned.
And a quick comment on the DI. You will have a hard time beating the sound of the DI on the WA. It performs well in a live or recording enviroment. As long as you tell the tech what you have going on they'll be good. Set your stage volume and then send the board the signal. I always start off with the DI @ 0. A tech or engineer hate it when you're cliping the board out of the gate. If you need to touch the master though. Reduce your DI output the same value at what you increased the master.

While I'm at it. I might as well add my above comment. I also play a top of the line Tanglewood acoustic bass. I originally bought for practicing at home when the warden is sleeping. But I've used it a # of times now with the WA and love the tone. Strung with the TI acoustic strings it really sounds sweet. What I don't like is the sound of my US Jazz V deluxe. But I think it is the bass and not the WA. The E-G sounds ok. But the B is way too muddy for me. Waiting for a set of TI Jazz rounds to come in. And then we'll see how it sounds. I don't like the fact I need to change the eq'ing on the WA everytime I go to the 5'r. Any thoughts on this?

PS... Thanks Rod. Btw. My bass was still in tune when I pulled it outta the case. :))

What about the 5 string bothers you?

while it does actually have output at that level, I prefer to start at 9 o'clock. I've never had that, or, even noon be too hot, but if you start at zero and they want it trimmed, you're hosed. Sound guys, every last one I've worked with, live or studio, have always loved the Walkabout DI tone. I, for sure, would not change it to pre-eq. I don't use very drastic eq settings though. In fact, about all I do is trim some 50hz, and boost some 4khz.
