Mesa Boogie Walkabout Mega-thread Part 10

Anyone ever swap out the stock speakers in a Scout 12 for something else in particular? If so, what, and why?

Having grown increasingly aware of a midrange fuzziness I don't care for, (it's right in the 340-400 hz range) I'm thinking of trying a pair of (8 ohm) FaitalPro 12's in my two Scouts...

Thoughts?
Don't know about and haven't played the Scout cabs, but I found the Walkabout to be a good match with a 2x12"+6" mid cab with Faital Pro FH500 drivers. I've liked the WA most with fairly tight cabs with a nice midrange response. Haven't liked it through scooped sounding cabs.

I've actually been contemplating getting rid of my Mesa headcase (used to be Chef's if I remember correctly). Not because I don't like it, but really only because my WA has been relegated to backup status lately and I could use some extra cash. I won't lie and say it's lightweight - it definitely adds a good amount of bulk and weight, but it looks killer and gives great protection (and is also narrower than a typical rack setup). There's a vent in the top, and of course the back section is completely open for the fan, so I can't imagine it negatively affecting the cooling.

If you're seriously interested in the WA head case, PM me and maybe we can arrange something.

I agree. My WA sounds excellent with both my Berg CN212 as well as my HD210. They complement each other very well, and the sensitivity of the CN in particular gets a little more out of the WA without having to go a larger cab like a 412 or 610. I didn't have my WA at the same as when I had some Aggie GS112's, but I'd imagine that would not be the best match.

I live within an hour's distance (by foot or public transportation) from Aguilar, Carl Thompson, D'addario, DiMarzio, DR Strings, Epifani, EHX, Fodera, Sadowsky, Spector, Tech21, Valenti, and several more that escape me, but I am still jealous of the awesomeness that comes from NoCal.

Wow, that's a lot of history you're close to ! Also, don't forget besides Mesa and Alembic being here in Sonoma County, there is also Modulus, aka Rich Lasner's VOX guitar shop. Rich designed the Peavey Cirrus, Modulus Flea, Steve Vai Ibanez, and many more iconic guitars and basses. I go to his shop once a year or so and bring a pizza.
There's also MXR, Gallien Krueger, SWR (when they were around), Clarke Kent Amplification, and more I'm sure. Garz Guitars is a few hours away near Reno.

On a less smart-assy note (forgive me - I'm jealous, but I'm not kidding about the sushi), I've recently settled on using a gold-pin, short-plate JJ 12AX7 in V1 and a regular (non-gold-pin) short-plate in V2. Forgive me (again) if I already reported this -- the gold-pin version and the regular are pretty different tubes. The gold is more extended and crisp, top and bottom, more clear overall, and smoother and more relaxed through the mids. Two were too much of the last for me, but one in V1 is nice. I still like the regular tubes in both slots - more textured and present mids, better for old school sounds but still able to be fairly crisp. Would like to combine the qualities of both.

I was going to do some tube rolling in my Walkabout, but when I was opening the case, my screwdriver started to strip the screw heads! :jawdrop::eek:

Now I have a GE 12AX7 just sitting in my drawer. :bawl:

I had one or two that were especially tight too last time I opened up one of my Walkabout heads. Using a toothpick, drizzle a little silicone or Teflon oil around the screws, and allow time for it to wick down the threads. Use *exactly* right size screwdriver.

Klein are good (I own a couple sets). So are lots of others. Generally, the trick is to avoid the sets "aimed at home owners that don't know any better". If the screw driver set comes with a claw hammer, back away.

A decent set of screw drivers will last for decades if you don't use them as pry bars, chisels, paint mixers, etc.

The screws in my WA are #2 Phillips as I recall as well. A firm grip, and push *down* hard...

The key is quality....you can go into any Lowes/Home Depot type of store and get what you need, but don't be afraid to spend $5-10 on a single screwdriver....what you don't want is the $1.99 bargain model....it will fail you everytime....the screwdriver blade(s) on the cheap ones with round out quickly, and that in turn will have you rounding out the screws in you amp (or whatever you're working on.)

Huge +1 here.

Shortly after I got my Walkabout I remember using it with some very scooped Epifani cabs and loathing how it sounded. All the awesome coushioney plushy awesomeness of the Walkabout was gone.

Well, I am new to all of this so forgive some stupid questions. I am getting a Walkabout head. And I am looking to get a Bergantino HD112 with another one later when finances allow.
I used only combos so far, and have no experience with connecting amp to cab(s). Berg is 8 Ohms, and walkabout have two channels to connect to speakers which are marked 8 Ohms each. When I use a single cab, I suppose I just plug to either of these two, right? Also, is there a special cable to use for this, or is it the same as instrument cable?
And the last, when I add a second cab 8 Ohms, do I plug it in the other channel separately? Or something else?
Thanks for your help, I don't want to screw something up right at the beginning.

When you plug your Mesa into your Berg, you can use either of the 8 ohm jacks on the back of the Mesa. If you get a second 8 ohm cab, you can daisy chain it off the first Berg or you can plug it into the second 8 ohm jack on your Mesa.

Do NOT use an instrument cable to connect your amp to a speaker. It may catch fire. Best off using a quarter inch speaker cable.
