Mesa Boogie Walkabout Mega-thread Part 10

I should try running the Walkabout send into the Strategy return... would this make a 500+ tube watts Walkabout??? LOL
I've tried this with my Prodigy and it wasn't the best combo- plugging other pres into the Walkabout power section sounds fantastic though! Unfortunately the driver tube in the Walkabout comes after the FX Loop, and it is a big part of the sweetness of the amp...

yeah, pretty much not. many of us have tried various combinations of WA pre (FX out) into bigger power (FX in), and I have yet to hear anyone say it got them a XXX watt Walkabout. Personally, I have tried it with a Mesa MPulse 600, Mesa 2:90 (lower power, but all tube) as well as an SVT 6pro. All of these combinations worked, but none of them gave me a "louder WA", and none of them made it worth hauling 2 amps to a gig.

As sunbeast said above, there is something about the driver tube connection to the mosfets in the WA that makes it really shine.

Does anyone know why Mesa discontinued the extension cabs?

It was a very expensive cab to purchase for what it was. That being just a 112. My guess is it just wasn't a big seller. I have one and never ever use it. I bought it with my combo thinking I'd take it out for loud gigs. The truth is, I only take the combo if it's all I'll need. For larger gigs I choose a 900Watt micro head and one or two light weight 410's.

Keep an eye out in the classifieds here on TB for mine.

I never even considered the extension cab, and I love my Walkabout combo. For me its a matter of portability- the combo is an easy lug with everything together, but if I needed to bring two cabs I may as well just bring my Walkabout separate and bring one larger cab. The Scout cabs aren't exactly the lightest cabs, so I couldn't think of a practical reason to use them outside the combo except for aesthetics. They do have a nice and unique tone, but I find more than one together to be kinda tubby sounding for my uses...

Mesa seems to still care about its reputation. They respond to us and try to help. Very cool in the age of sending endorsers into TB threads to hype one's brand (and, on occasion, trash someone's else's brand).
ha, yes, I know a few that fit this bill on TB. I have often wondered why the TB owner(s) seem to willingly accept the kind of very transparent shilling these folks do, as well as the bashing of competing brands .. all supposedly done in the name of "fair and balanced" opinions.

ah well, such is the state of the web, and TB has so much else going for it, I tend to let it slide (mostly ;))

Genz Benz was exceptional at this before they went under the Fender knife. I was very happy to see that Aged Horse joined the Mesa team. He continues to be a great, informed and honest presence here on TB.

I have a Bag End S15X-D cabinet and am considering the Walkabout. Does anyone use that combination and can you comment if that is going to be loud enough in a band setting given that it is 165 W into 8 ohms?

To take advantage of the amp, I may also consider a second cabinet (Bag End S15-D). The weight factor wouldn't be great (almost 100 lbs for the cabinets), but that would be 4 ohms for the pair ... would these speakers need more power than what the Walkabout can provide?

I know that another option would be a 4 ohm 212 cabinet or 2 8 ohm 112 cabinets for lighter weight, but I would prefer to stay with 15's.

I had a S15X-D and sold it (bad move) and now have a WA so didn't play them together but I'd think it would be a great pairing, especially with 2 of the 15s. The efficiency of the Bag Ends would help get the most out of the low-powered WA and the warmth of the WA would complement the Bag Ends mid-focus. The Bag Ends don't need much power to sound good.

Plus, they would look cool together.

I have relied upon this rig almost exclusively for the past five years. The extension cab is fairly new! Yes, it's the 15 Lugabout

I see you have the "tone luggage" rack on it as well. My WA 12 has this as well. cool accessory. When I had 2 x 1x12's, I had the cart on both of them, so I could almost always do a two hand/1 trip load-in/out.
