Mesa Boogie Walkabout Mega-thread Part 9!

Hey guys,

This is probably a long shot, but I'm looking to trade my new Mesa Boogie Walkabout black rack ears for a pair of silver Walkabout rack ears.

I didn't realize when I bought them they would be black, I should have known though since only the black Walkabouts are in production now. It's too late now.

Anyone up for a trade?

Anyone ever have issues with noise coming from their WB when the guitar cable is pulled from the head? I recently picked up a 2nd WB and noticed when switching basses, if I pull out the cable from the input jack to mute the thump sound, the amp starts crackling and hissing. It goes away again as soon as a guitar cable is plugged back in. Not sure what is going on here. Anyone ever experience this?

In the approximately four years I've had my WA rig, this has occurred exactly ONCE; a loud POP and a brief SIZZLE as I unplugged the cable from the input jack. I must admit, it freaked the hell out of me at the time, and made me think some major failure was about to occur. But it just happened that one and only occasion.

Mine started doing this at one point- it would also get a progressively louder (as the tubes warmed up) scratchy/hissy noise when I plugged a passive bass straight in, though it was still quiet when any low impedance source like an effect pedal was on in front of it. It turned out that switching out the v1 tube fixed it (new tubes these days are not as reliable as once they were!).

Thanks, I was told that the amp had just been retubed but it might be worth having a look and maybe trying another tube to see if it makes a difference. I thought maybe the input jack was messed up somehow but would be so happy if its just a tube.

Try spraying a 1/4" cable end with deoxit and working it in and out of the input jack several times. Sometimes jacks get corroded, although usually it's the ones that aren't getting used often, like effects send and return. Worth a try though.

Was able to pick up an SKB 3U rack at a great deal brand new to fit my oblong underbelly Mesa Walkabout bass head. Now I just have to save for a nice cabinet.

Some might hate the Korg DTR1000 strobe mode, but I like it :D

Count me as a long-time member of the Walkabout club... going on like 8 or 9 years with mine now. I'm experiencing my first issue with it now, though. Last night at practice I noticed that there was a bit of a fuzziness over the decay of my notes...it's not cutting in and out, just kind of an extra layer of distortion regardless where the gain & volume controls are set.

I changed out cables, speaker cables, made sure the preamp tubes were seated correctly, etc. I'm going to try swapping out the tubes one at a time tonight, but before I do that, does anyone else have any ideas? Could it be something in the cab, an Aguilar DB210?

Done and done. As mine is an early red face which I never sent back to be updated, I've cleaned it all out and patched the effects jacks long ago. I'm hoping its just the tubes. I've never had one fail on me, but there's a first time for everything. I'm not exactly gentle with my gear. :/
