Mesa Boogie Walkabout Mega-thread Part 9!

Ok, this last post makes me wonder if I should invest in the upgrades. I have a new to me version 2 (sliver face, 2 inputs, no fx bypass) and have been considering investing in the updates? My WA is off warranty and the nearest authorized service center is a couple hours drive away. Now I am incredibly cheap so I am reluctant to put money into something that already seems to work, but I can be convinced.

So any convincing can proceed please. or not

Have you wiggled (or cleaned) the multi-pin connectors that are used for cables that jumper one circuit board to another? I've had some slight issues with those things and my Walkabout seldom leaves the house.

If you're going to investigate those, as a safety precaution, please make sure that your amp is unplugged and has been sitting for a while before you open it up and dig in.

I'm in the club now. Picked up a Walkabout Scout from a dealer that's losing their dealership so I got a 15% discount. I couldn't pass that up. I have to say that the Walkabout Scout is the most musical bass amp I've played. Love, love, love it.

I had mine serviced at the mesa boogie store in Hollywood last year. New mesa tubes and input switch added, less than $90 out the door. I am also a cheapskate but I was happy with that price.

I've been playing my new combo a lot and besides the tone my second favorite thing about the combo is that it make for a perfect seat when I'm practicing. No seriously, I can play at a low volume and not annoy everyone and still feel the bass.

Yeah-the height is great for that......but they oughtta embed a leather cushion in the top panel for my butt ;-))

I like "the Sting sound" and I've been trying to recreate it with a Precision Bass through my WalkAbout/Ampeg SVT210AV-rig but I can't seem to get it right.

It's all in the fingers, I know, but is there something I'm missing? To me, it's a mid-heavy sound with a tight low end and a dash of chorus on top.

Does anybody have an idea about what kind of settings would get me in the ballpark soundwise?

Hello all,
I've been gigging my walkabout with two ML112's lately and am very very pleased with my tone...until I played my last classic rock gig with no FOH. I hit the clean output limit that the walkabout could offer, and from then on, it was distorted. No fault of the ML112's at all, just ran out of amp power.

I see guys here using cabs like NV610, Nv412 etc to get to loud gig volume with their walkabouts. Going with 3x ML112 would probably get me to where I want to be volume wise, but I don't really want to transport all that cab mass for the odd loud gig like my last one. Can anyone suggest a more compact loud alternative? The ML's are spec'd for 98 db each.

ps...the walkabout rockkkks!!

A friend of mine was doing an album for an artist with Hugh Padgham producing who also did Stings records.
My bud told Hugh that he wanted that Sting sound. Hugh took him into AM studio in LA and put up Ten Sumners Tales bass soloed. Naked bass tracks... My bud said Stings tone was all clicky clacky and fret buzz when soloed.. But in the track it is what you hear on the record.. Minus mastering of course... I think Sting was playing his old jazz bass on that one.. Id have to ask my friend.
So keep that in mind..

That said., i really want a walkabout.. I tired one when they first came out in a music store and thought it was the best sounding little am that i ever heard .... Very organic... Just wont keep up with most gigs i do. I may have to think about the 115 combo...

Yeah, I suppose it sounds a bit strange soloed but I really like the way it sits in the mix. Take Message in a bottle for example, it sits perfectly between drums and guitar without clouding up the bottom end.

I recently picked up a 4 Ohm used Epi UL410 (series 1) in superb shape. 55lbs. With that under the Walkabout, the headroom is ample and the tone thoroughly satisfying. Unrelated to your post, but I also picked up a pair of 4 Ohm Wizzy 12s off eBay, after I saw the auction and remembered how great my WA sounded through that stack and realized I could get them for a very low price.

Yup. The little engine that could......if you put it on top of enough cone area. Since it flies under 4 Ohms (even if not recommended), why not get an 8 Ohm 112 combo and a 4 Ohm 212 ext cab, or just a simple 4 Ohm 410 and done?

Make sure you try that 115 Scout combo before buying. I'm a fan of the Walkabout and also like the 112 combo. The 115 combo IMO is WAY too much of a good thing. Mushy lows, very relaxed midrange response, and big enough to be total pain to schlep. IMO you would be much better off buying the head and the cab of your choice.

Really don't like that combo at all. IMO and IME.
