Mesa Boogie Walkabout Part 6

Hey,
Is anyone here in WA Mega-thread land pairing their WA 12 combo with a Scout 1x12 underneath ?

I am strongly considering adding a second cab to my beloved WA for certain gigs where I feel the need to move a bit more air than the single 12 in the combo, and wonder what the hands-on/ears-on feedback on this combination is.

For reference, I have used the following extension cabs over the past 5 years already:

Scout 1x15
very nice booty down low - but sadly I no longer have it

Accugroove Tri115
also very nice with the WA 12, very clean and open sounding - nice sonic match to the WA cab sound - also no longer have it.

Aguilar GS112NT
this cab was ok, kind of neutral to my old ears, with that Aguilar mid-scoop thing, and did not add much except another driver, which was ok, but not enough to keep it around.

Hartke 4x10 Transporter
used this a number of years ago and really did not like it, but I am not a big 10's fan anyway.

so, anyone want to offer some hands-on/ears-on insight into using a Scout 1x12 with a WA 12 combo ?

thanks

Due to its midrange-powerful voicing, the Walkabout can definitely hold its own in a mix when paired with the right cabinet(s)- its voicing makes it louder for my purposes than any other 300 watt solid state amp I've ever used. It does not have the same sort of endless headroom feel that my 300 "tube-watt" 400+ had through the same cabinet though.

I too love my Walkabout combo and have tried a few different 112 underneath and pretty much anything adds to the overall volume. I really prefer matching cabs and ended up pairing a Walkabout head with a pair of 8 ohm Powerhouse 112 cabs. It's a very sweet match! I would jump all over a Scout extension cab if one came up locally but they are quite rare and a little over the top expensive new.

Yes, I forgot to add that I had used a PH 112 with the WA as well. I actually did not care for the combination so much myself. The PH cabs have that aggressive Mesa mid punch that the WA and Scout cabs don't have quite so much of. On the upside, they sure do cut through !

I certainly agree that used Scout cabs are far and few between. I know there was a beautiful pair of Scout 15's in wine/red tolex for sale here on TB recently that really got my interest, but I was not really looking for that much speaker-age.

Another option would be to grab one of the more common WA cabs (not Scouts) that the users have removed the WA amp from. My only issues with that option is that:
- the handle is on the top (could be moved)
- the cab volume would be just a bit less than the Scout
- the passive radiator on the Scout is larger than the similarly sized WA cab.
- would have to deal with a male/female adaptor arrangement to connect the second WA cab to the amp

Not sure any of that would make a huge difference in sound, and they are much more available in the used market compared to Scout cabs.

oh well, the search goes on.

I went this route and it sounded great. They stack just fine, even with the handle on top and getting a male/female adaptor is no problem.

I really like the Walkabout 2x GK 112 Neo rig.
The GK speeks are a little brighter than the Scout cabs, and not quite as deep.

I can't speak to the "how does it compare to an Eden 410" part though.

I think NOLA is running that rig as well.

I'm hoping to have one soon. I think Marcus is using this configuration. You might give him a PM.

This is actually what I'm doing. Two scout cabs with these added:

Amazon.com: Neutrik NJ3FP6C-BAG 1/4 Locking Chassis Jack Black: Electronics

Works like a charm and sounds awesome...like more cow bell...and when I say cow bell, I mean Walkabout goodness.

I use my Walkabout in the Scout 12 and with two GK NEO 112 II's. I like the Scout for single 12 use but the 2 GK's are great for a bigger option. Agreed on brighter and not as deep. I will point out that they are loud! I have used the Mesa WA into the 2GK's more than once with my louder band (hard rock/metal) with two guitarists both running Marshall heads into 412's. My normal rig with that band is a GK 1001RBII into a Epi PS410. However, the Mesa and 2 GK 112's hung in there just fine.

The speakon conversion is what I did back when I had my WA cab, and it worked out great—as long as you intend to use it as an extension.

cool, so how did you do that mod ? Drill an appropriate sized hole in the back of the cab, push the barrel of the speakon jack into the hole, screw the speaker terminal wires to the jack, then run the screws through. Do I see some sort of gasket/flashing material in the pic ?

thanks

so I take it from the replies so far that no one in the WA Mega thread(s) is using an actual Scout extension cab with their WA ? It seems as if some are using the more readily available "airhead" WA cabs with the amp removed.

From the replies I understand it would be a pretty easy matter to use the airhead WA cab, but I'm still torn on the question of using a Scout extension or the airhead WA cab.
