Mesa Boogie Walkabout Part 6

If a tube doesn't fix it and you bypassed the effects loop I would think it's time to go to a tech or back home to the factory.

Well said Alan:
"one man's loud is another mans "I can't hear you!"
Thought you liked the Epi?
Other than an Berg AE, what is the 60ish lb 4x10 that's a good match?
(will force myself to go to GC one quiet afternoon this week to audition a GK 2x12 with a WA)

"will force myself to go to GC one quiet afternoon"

Are you sure this exists? :D

Forgive me if this has been answered already, but has anyone tried the GK neo1x12 along with the scout 1x12 combo? If so, how was the matchup and the sound?

I have. The GK is a little brighter, a little more upper mid presence and articulate. My GK is 8 ohm and Scout is 4 but volume was very close. If both 8 ohm, the GK is likely louder. I a/b'd my buddy's Ampeg 112 too and it the GK was def louder than the Peg.

The Scout is a tad deeper, def rounder and warmer. I think they can match up fine .

Together, as in "at the same time?"

I wouldn't recommend that.
They're voiced very differently.

They are but I just plugged in the GK next to it while keeping the Scout on too. Actually sounded pretty good. However, That was at home. Might be different on stage though. They certainly sound different, that's for sure.

Still a very desireable product that will sell at a reasonably good price since you can currently verify low hours.
I can not hear any difference between NOS and used assuming they both test well.
Also like the idea that if it went 30+ years it is solid. Have had new tubes (be they new or old stock) that failed just because they were defective.
Power tubes are an all together different subject.

Well, the JAN Philips lasted all of an hour before it went bad, lol. I turned my amp on yesterday to a symphony of hisses and pops. Pulled the Walkabout out of the Scout, opened her up, and discovered that the JAN was the culprit. Hopefully returning it won't be a big hassle; I'm waiting for Doug to call me back... .

 :( :rollno:

Can someone send me the scheme to have direct output independent from master?
(Walkabout manual:
"If you must have true independence between these two controls - and cannot learn to work with the stock scheme, contact us directly and we can fax you a simple modification you can do that will remove the MASTER and its associated stage from the DIRECT signal path")

Thanks!

I wanted to see this as well. I emailed Mesas customer service for the schematic and they never replied. You might have to call them to get some action.

Really sorry to hear that; they can be like lightbulbs sometimes. FWIW, I never heard the magic in the JAN tubes but others certainly have.

That bit from Mesa:
"and cannot learn to work with the stock scheme"

Pretty condescending in my book

IME "contact directly" = phone call with Mesa.

Yeah. They are an old school company in many ways, some of which are good, and some of which leave me shaking my head. Insisting on phone instead of email for most communication falls into the latter category. It's personal and quaint, but woefully inefficient and often very inconvenient, especially considering that they are in a different time zone from many of their customers. Whatever. Tone has it's price:p.

He guys, I'm picking up a walkabout again and I have a chance to buy two older models. One has the two separate inputs and the other has the switch. The one with the two inputs comes with a 5 yr factory warranty the other has 2-3yrs left. Both mint condition, no updates or mods... Both about $1000.

Firstly, which one do you think I should buy? And second, should I be thinking about sending it to mesa to get it "updated"? What does mesa do to these older units to bring them up to date? Any opinions and info much appreciated! thanks.
