Mesa M6 Carbine Mega-Thread Pt Deux

How many "tricks" the a bass player really need? I would take an amp that sounds fantastic no matter how the knobs are positioned any day over an amp that has to be tweaked just right to find the tone I'm after. If you have never played through a Carbine you are in for a revelation. I find this amp is the perfect marriage of clarity, punch, and raw power with a enough tube warmth blended in to be simply sublime!

I love you all guys.

Damn, everything is easier with TB. There's some voodoo involved I'm sure ...

Seriously I had the chance to try the M6 Combo and I've been blown away (literally), 'cause it's damn loud and the tone was there. I didn't play with all the knobs to check its versatility though and that's why I had to ask.

But indeed, the tone was there with everything at noon.

So guess who'll drive 500km to get his new M6 tomorrow ?

For all M6 lovers,

I'm about to pull the trigger on an M6. The only thing that I'm worried about is this : I'm afraid it's a one trick pony, given it only has Bass/Mid/Treble for tweaking tone.

I know I could buy an M9 but it has too much power for my needs.

Am I overly worried ? What's your take on this ?
Don't underestimate the power of those eq controls. There are more tonal options than you probably think. :)

You'll never regret it.

Let us know how it goes.

This forum is the devil! :hiding:

I have loved this amp since I played one at NAAM 2007. I always dreamed of one, but never could justify it. I've been rigless for a few months now.. just playing whatever the venue has or direct FOH and In-ears.

Well I've got a big gig coming up this weekend that demands a small rig on stage... I started looking through classifieds, making mental excuses for buying lessor amps for cheaper... then it hit me: I've loved this amp for almost 3 years and never bought it. Well that's changed. I just picked one up new from GC and I can't wait for the gig next Saturday.. or playing alone in my house.

For now, its just going through a Markbass Traveler 2x10 (please keep the collective groans to yourself :o)

Anyone have any experience with this and Markbass cabs?

I generally just set my preamp (or head) tone controls to give me a clear, tight, punchy, solid tone then if I need to adjust for room acoustics, I do that from my SR5.
I've played many a full 3 & 1/2 hrs of music without touching my amp or my bass guitar's tone controls.

Official "week one" report:
Had one jam night and a rehearsal with my cover band. Man, this amp is freaking loud. There ain't no bedroom or apartment level on this thing (although I manage to play "quietly" with it).

The tone is awesome. Everything is there. I had some apprehensions as whether its simplistic EQ whould be enough. I now completely agree with Crabby:

Every knobs is very usable, especially the Voice Control.

Comparing to my Walkabout, I prefer the M6 for everything hard rock oriented. But for my acoustic-folk band, the WA is a keeper. I was surprised to found out that I quite enjoyed the grit or distortion I had with the M6 when I was digging in.

Here a little vid a made at our last rehearsal. Enjoy :)

(The camera was right in front of my guitarist's cab, but you can still hear the M6 :D)

Does anyone here use an Epifani ul410 with their M6?
One of my all time favorite bass rigs.

I currently actually have both an M6 and an M9, and I've played both through my older Series 2 UL410. Oh my. All I have to say is, especially if you play something with a lot of depth and clarity, like an MTD, you'll never hear a more detailed representation of your bass. It's really something.

But even if you like a bit more of a classic sound, just back off the highs, bump the mids a bit (using voicing and/or mid control), maybe tweak the bass one way or another to suit, and it's a big powerful chest pounding sound.

I really can't imagine ever needing a sound or volume level that rig can't produce unless you're into overdrive without using pedals (which I think is probably a minority). These heads were designed pretty specifically for clean tone, even though they contain a tube... that tube is just there to add a bit of "roundness" to the sound.

But even if you like a bit more of a classic sound, just back off the highs .....

Not to turn this into an Epifani thread but I've had my Series 1 UL410 for about a year. And I've ALWAYS had the tweeter at the half way point. :hmm: Well this week, I decided to play around with different settings.

Was I amazed! It's like three or four different cabs depending on how you set the tweeter. Add to that the versatility of the Carbine's eq.

All I have to say is that there's a lot of good sounds in there. ;)

I recently bought a used Series II UL-2 4 ohm 410 from a guy who used it exclusively with his Carbine M9. I also have an M9 and I can tell you its an amazing match. The cab is so light and easy to carry and the pairing of the Mesa and Epi cab is really glorious.

When a/b'd with my Mesa PH412, I still prefer the 412 for its aggresive growl and insane depth, but it weighs 137 pounds compared to the UL's 56 pounds. I can see the Carbine/Epi rig getting a lot of use!
