I will choose to let agedhorse explain the suggested cooling of the M9 heads. I wouldn't use anything smaller than a 3 space for my own reasons and history of amps. Playing at a lower volume will not effect this comment but if your pushing the amp.... that's my 2 cents.

Since I don't know which version she has, and what might have been done to it, I can't give a good answer to the question.
I don't know which version I got either. How do I know this? Should I take the photo (or some photos) of the opened amp and post it here (or tell some info about the amp that could tell you which version it is)? Would that make it clear? My serial is M9-000411. I've been told that this amp was only serviced for maintenance. Nothing changed, nothing done to it. Thanks!

What you have been told and what was actually done often times doesn't match. I can't tell from pictures. Is there an authorized service center in a nearby country? That may be your best bet.

All I can tell you is that I called Mesa directly and they looked up my amps (by the serial numbers) and advised me on optional and (in their judgement) required updates I should consider. Talking to the factory folks where they know exactly what went on in terms of configuration changes during production and vendor parts issues (if there were any) is the only way to be sure what you have - assuming no one else made mods before you got the unit.
Bottom line: call Mesa directly. IME they like to talk to you and prefer not to handle customer interface via email and texts. As you've surfaced here there are a number of potential variables and a real time conversation with a real person is the best way to sort through the variables. I suggest you have your amp in front of you when you call and be ready with your serial number. I'd be shocked if you can't get every question answered in one call.

+1...this class of amp generates heat and it needs room to breath. In my experience, heat and shock/vibration are two of the biggest things that tend to drive early failures in electronic gear. We can be careful in our handling of equipment and we can be sure not to restrict the availability of cooling air/air flow. You'll probably be fine with 2u case, but why take the chance with restricting/limiting the airflow when 3u cases are equally available and affordable?

Sounds like a brief long distance call (The factory guys are in Monday - Thursday) might actually be your cheapest and simplest way to start. I've always found that when I want ground truth from the source, it's tougher to get second-hand.
ok, what about hiss in this amp? Is it just my M9 or is the hiss (with input gain cranked) really loud? It starts hissing at noon (still acceptable) but then escalates really quickly... and loudness also - I've never played an amp where the input gain would make such a huge jump in loudness, but this one it makes huge difference. So with input gain cranked to the max (which is unusable because of really loud hiss), the master volume can barely be open (rotated for 1mm or so from zero), and It's still really loud, and the hiss is crazy loud. With my M-2000 I have the input gain always opened to the max, and on my D-800 i have input opened to 4 o'clock, and it doesn't affect the volume that much (saturation yes, but volume not that much as with the M9), so I can still use master volume normally. Also no hiss is present. What's your experience? Anyone playing M9 with input gain cranked? Thanks!
If you have a tweeter, attenuate or turn it off if the speaker cabinet has this feature. That will help reduce the hiss.

There's a lot more gain available on the M9, therefore more hiss will be present at those higher gains.
Generally, at higher gains you will be into some fairly serious distortion with most basses/pickups, so you will want to turn the tweeter down as distortion and tweeters generally do not sound very good to most players.

Hi! Joaquin from Spain! i just rescue this thread, i bought a second hand M9 amazing and had the doubt of the power, and wrote to mesa boogie and get this info.
"If the power transformer says that the “SEC V” is 55 VAC, then the amp is 600 watts.
But if the “SEC V” is 65 VAC, then the amp’s wattage is 900 watts.
To see these numbers, you would have to open the amp (take the the top off). It must be turned OFF, and the AC cord unplugged, and allowed to be OFF for a few hours for the internal parts to discharge and be safe."
