Personally, I'd never need this much goosing 'cause the amp "flat" is pretty much right where I want it the vast majority of the time, but for those who really like to mess with alternate sounds, this can be an important feature.

I should also mention that at least to my ear, the M6 and M9 do not have a "night/day" difference in "loudness". They both pretty much crush, so if you're looking at both amps right now, don't make power a primary selection criteria. Seriously.

GREAT info Vic. Thanks! I too love the M6 standard voicing, set very close to flat. I use voice 2 or 3 and modify the EQ knobs slightly to get what I want. And for me, I never fail to get what I want. The tone controls are very well voiced and have very useable ranges.

I don't really see the need to blend different voices other than it might be 'cool' to try.

Power? The M6 Master Vol has never been higher than 10 o'clock on mine and it's almost stupid loud at that level. I normally play with the Master Vol at 9 o'clock. And its still plenty loud with TONS of punch!

I'd love to play with my volume at 9, but I'm already getting the stinkeye with mine around 8! But for me, it's just backline. I always gig with PA support.

I have a question for all you M9 guys.
Have any of you seen any cabinets in the Embossed leather like Wine Crocodile? I saw a PH1200 done in Tan Lizard and it was amazing looking. Its an expensive ass upgrade I know, but this is the last rig im buying ever. period. I would rather wait an extra month and get something unique that I wont be motivated to sell at some later date. I think a 6x10 and a 2x12 would cover anything I could ever imagine doing.

Had to send my m9 to petaluma almost two weeks ago. I heard an annoying strange distorted echo after hitting around the D note on the a string...weird... Changed out the tube with two separate replacements and no change. Customer service was great on the phone..shipping was on their dime.. but the wait is killing me...may have to buy a different/backup amp for my gig on 10/21 if I don't hear back from them soon...I might have an excuse to buy my third walkabout..:)

IME the Mesa CS stuff is drop dead gorgeous: eye candy that equals the ear candy they put out.

OK. My brief experiment comparing Crown XLS 1500 with VT Dlxe and/or Eden WTDI to my M9 is over.....even before the band test. In the end. I can get very close to the tones I want, but (although I cannot explain it), the M9 seems louder. Much more importantly (since they're both more than loud enough), however, is the simplicity of the M9. Plug it in and it's all there, all the time. Tone, power, girth, eq flexibility and compression. The other setup saves a few lbs (worth a little to me, but not that much) but is more complex and still only gets me only 95% of the way there. The champ stands. BTW, the Crown and VT will be returned, but the WTDI is available for 105 shipped CONUS and if anyone needs a 5' bridging speakon-speakon cable that's also available.

Except the Dr. Strangelove reference should, IMHO, be changed to, "...Stop worrying and love the 'Suitcase Nuke'." :D

I have a lead sled and a shuttle 6.0 to compare to the M9. The sled has a lot of slam, and I have a fine tube pre (Art Tube Channel) and a BMax. The Shuttle is light (3.75 lbs.) and like the CA6, can totally deliver the goods for tone and power. Yet, the M9 (27 lbs.) wins for tone, flexibility, power (2 ohms!) and simplicity—and is still way lighter than the Crest CA6 which lives in a 4-space rack with the two preamps (~72 lbs.).

Between my Walkabout and my M9, I pretty much lost all amp GAS. I am hanging on to my GK MB500 as its just so tiny but as good as it is, the GK just doesn't have the tone of the Mesa heads.

Well, I wouldn't quite say it that way.
The Walkabout and M9 could hardly be more different; so, there's that.

But, the GK stuff has-and really always has had-it's own flavor.
So does Mesa, and really, they always have as well.
I wouldn't make that a ''qualitative statement,'' but rather a preference.

YMMV.

Quick update on this combo vs. the M9/HS410. Short practice at a reasonably loud volume and as expected this can has no problems keeping up. Really a nice balanced, deep & full top to bottom sound that you could really feel as well as hear. It's a stirring piece. It's more natural disposition to the bass side of things makes it a very natural pairing with the M9 it seems. EX off, Tone knobs all around noon/flat, voice 2 seems to suit me OK right now. I can certainly get a large degree of deep bass if I choose. Quite an impressive cab on many, many levels. As I have learned the HS410 is a bit more mid-voiced so to get a sound that I prefer required a lot more working with the EQ tone controls and not as forgiving or easy to dial in, if that makes sense. The Bergantino if great if you like that voicing, and many do, but for what I am doing now I am liking my early read on the PH1000. I was a bit concerned because the reviews that I read were all love/hate and little in between. The worst said that it was a muffled or muddy cabinet but I didn't get that at all. You can dial in as much or as little clarity and brightness as you choose. With the Player Control input pad it may as versatile a cabinet as the M9 is a head. One thing that I do know for sure is that 4 new Caster City casters are gonna make this beast a lot more manageable too...

Me neither. However, exercise is a lovely thing, especially when the old hand truck does all but the dead lifts.

Are you still pairing the M9 with an Epifani 410 4 ohm UL S1?

I just discovered my UL S1 is actually 8 lbs. lighter than I thought. :eek:
