Mesa M9 mega thread

I played my fretless Stingray through my M9 today into my Powerhouse 410 and it really is a godlike tone. I find the voicing filters very usable and the on board compressor is fantastic for keeping speaker excursion in check as well as enhancing the overall punch. What a sound!

After calling mesa CS back(my m9 has been there for a while now) I got a pleasant VM back explaining the service/upgrade done. Here are the details/upgrades

1. Repair phase
A. Driver transistor broken off board(possibly during shipping at some point)
B. Transistor brace installed(upgrade)
C. Fuse jumper installed(upgrade)
D. hard wired ground(upgrade)

Next up is the play test...

My newly acquired used M9 is putting out a loud buzzing sound. It's not a hiss. No bass or cables attached other than the speaker cable to my Berg cab. It's about the same volume as bedroom playing level, so it's difficult to use for practice at home. No controls affect the output of the buzz, neither volume or gain, ground lift switch, EQ, etc. It's just an always on type of thing. It wasn't this way when I first got it a couple of weeks ago.

I thought it was the tube, but I just replaced it with another Mesa tube and no difference. Any thoughts or experience? I can probably still use it for the gig tonight as it doesn't seem to affect the DI output.

Wish I could help:(

My pet dragon is back at Mesa in Petaluma now—for a second time, and this is its third visit to a tech if you count Audio Electronics here in DFW area. I am waiting to hear the Mesa diagnosis...

They can't reproduce the problem. Assuming it did not fix itself in transit, I will be unloading it ASAP. Done with Mesa. :spit:

They think the problem does not exist. CS blamed me, claiming testing it using 10" speakers was the problem! What's that?

I realize if they can't reproduce it, they can't fix it. But blaming driver diameter is silly. Others heard this, it did it in other locations with other interconnects, cabs, and basses. Switch out the head to my GB Shuttle 6.0 or racked CA6/pre and poof, problem gone. Ack! :atoz:

Blaming it on driver diameter is a screaming CS "fail":rollno:. Did they engineer a head that won't play well with their own 810???

When the head get's back here, I am going to post sound clips. Do All Y'all thangk that what I am hearing is the result of the reality distortion field deployed by da big-ol' Owwl Come-nees down here in the Lone Star state?

I was admonished that I should have used 15's because "They work better for bass." I kid not:
"10's are too 'blatty', but this is beyond my expertise."

I really like the M9 and pine for another, but I had two and both broke down on me so I gave up.

Years back my Bass 400+ kept blowing fuses, and while the problem was clearly in the set bias, Mesa would not accept that from me. Their tech "repaired" the amp twice and it still kept failing. Finally I said forget the warranty and took it to my regular amp tech. The set bias was way off. He installed bias pots, set the bias to the (3rd) set of tubes Mesa sent and the amp worked like a charm after that.

Mesa make great amps and I'm certain they make far more rugged, lasting amps than ones that fail, but I've had bad luck with them and also experienced a "head in the sand" attitude about the issues my amp was having from their customer service.

That's jacked.
I'd immediately work your way up the CS chain and report that lunacy to the next man up the ladder, rinse and repeat until you get someone that speaks Real Customer Service, even if that's the dang CEO.
Nicely and all, but, dang, that ain't right.

It's not even close to right.

I don't want to mention names. I know that a good faith effort was made to recreate the problem, and the "head passed all the tests." I guess that I will sell it.

They suggested that instead of saying "it's broken," I should sell it as "having just passed all the tests." Yawn.

However, assuming it still has the problem I sent it out for (at my own expense ~$55.00 shipping and insurance + ordering the shipping box sent to me for $40), I will record the sound and post it in my sig.

No offense Jim, but I think this is a mistake.

I would never sell a product I knew had an issue, unless I was willing to take a DEEP discount on it, fully expecting the new owner would eventually have to deal with it.

I suggest you stand to lose more money that way than figuring out what it takes to reproduce the problem, sending it back again, and not accepting the same head back until it's fixed... or maybe even ask for a replacement. Even with the extra shipping I think you'll lose less even if you still decide to flip it once fixed. At least at that point you'll be able to ask for the full resale value. As a "head with a known but hard to reproduce issue", nobody is gonna' want to pay much for it because they won't consider it truly gig-worthy until it's properly dealt with. In fact, you may even have trouble finding a buyer at all.

I also agree with the comment about going to a higher level at Mesa to get better service.

FWIW, and of course IMHO!
