Mesa M9 needs two rack spaces open above it?

Finally read the manual and was disappointed to see the Mesa Carbine M9 needs two open rack spaces above it. They should have just made the device four spaces tall! Dang I thought I had it sized right, as it fits perfectly front and back in one of my existing two space cases. Don't really want to go bigger. Reckon I might have to pull it from the rack upon arrival. Grrr.

I see it has some vents on the top - but it also has them front and back, plus a fan. Expensive piece of gear to take a chance on, but I bet it would be fine in a 2-space rack.

Measure carefully and mark where the vents are on the top of the rack. Cut narrow slots in the top of the rack with a jig saw where the vents are and only where the vents are. Make the initial hole for each jig saw run with a drill bit. Start each slot on the opposite side so the drill holes aren't lined up, which would weaken the rack.

Try to get a feel for the air flow inside the unit and how important the top vents are. Then you'll be able to tell how much you're restricting it in the rack and if the slots help enough. Stay away from kids with dimes.

Or, you could just follow the advice in the manual, mesa built the thing after all, and be sure your m9 has two rack spaces above it.

All kidding aside, I wouldn't take the chance, or ruin a perfectly good two space rack case.

Don't know if I'm tempting the fates, but I've been running my M9 in a 4 space rack for just about two years now with two other components mounted above it.

...Of course, the two components are a Korg tuner, and a Furman power strip, so plenty of ventilation.

I had 2 different M9's die on gigs and heat was the likely culprit.

I would NOT cram one into a 2U space without allowing it to breathe. Not a smart idea with this amp IMO.

Two rack spaces is probably overkill but it would forever be in the back of my mind. Plus if it did break I would always think it was my fault. I am too neurotic to let stuff like that slide.

looked in two stores and did not find a suitable rack at four spaces. What I want to try I would probably have to order: shock mount with casters on the end to tip up so it is taller and easier to push. Maybe a five space.
