Mesa Subway D-350!

More news on Mesa availability in Europe:

Mesa/Boogie amps are officially back on sale in Europe

Andertons is expecting Mesa amps, by end of March. D-350 is coming home!

I believe there are already some containers of amps and cabinets in Europe now but the delay is on having the full line available as well as distributed across multiple countries and then onto dealers. Quite a task for so many products and countries (each with their own unique quirky requirements in spite of the EU harmonization proclamations).

Last night I use my D-350 with a Phil Jones C4 cab for upright bass. It seems about perfect for me. Sounds just like the bass and very easy to dial in.....controls on the amp are centered! This is the easiest amplification I have ever used for upright bass.

I have not used the D-350 for electric bass on a gig. Lately I am favoring my D-800+ for electric bass. Gee, these amps are so fine.

Is your upright pickup piezo? I take it you were ok without a preamp?

The preamps in all of the Subway amps are designed to be compatible with most passive piezo pickups.

I actually do use a older Fishman Model B preamp but I use it so I have some tone/volume controls on the bass rather than for impedance matching. The pickup on my 3/4 is a Realist Copperhead and the pickup on my 7/8 is an Underwood. They are, of course, both piezo pickups.

The D-350 works fine with piezo pickups and no impedance matching preamp.

Kind of a cross post here...

New to me Barefaced Two10ST sounding very nice with a D-350. The BF rolls off lows naturally, so not missing the usual Subway HPF there. The bright switch livens up those BF 10CRs.

And with Mesa amps now available in Europe, and BF in the U.K. hmmm

Planning to A/B the Two10ST with a Scout 12" cabinet this weekend. Expecting them to sound similar at moderate volume.

If the scout is 4 ohms, be sure to be careful, the amp has way more than enough power to damage that cabinet. Even at 8 ohms a little bit of common sense is a good idea.

Hey team, hoping for some input on the volume on the 350

I currently have a Genzler Magellen (800W) that I run into 2x112 (genzler magellen cabs) - I have never raised the master over halfway...

I'm super keen on the 350, but would be running it through these cabs and wonder if its enough volume at 350W? We also have PA support unless its a tiny venue (once in a blue moon).I realise volume is somewhat subjective and contextual...would it be better to run 2x410 if I really struggled with the 2x112 volume ? or is it watts I need?

Am I going to miss the extra power of the Magellan? I'm just not digging its tone and am running a sansamp into the effects loop at present (again volume and drive never over 12 noon).

I'm after a small, quiet (like the genzler) amp, but with the tone shaping flexibility of the subway...the issue for going for the D800 is the price is so painful here in AUS, so too the 350 but more attainable.

Thanks!

I have used the D-350 multiple times at indoor and outdoor gigs with my Berg CN212 (4 Ohms) or two GK Neo 112 II cabs (a 4 Ohm combined load). I find it to be plenty powerful enough.

In at least one post I mentioned the band getting a noise complaint at an outdoor block party where the members of the local constabulary thought the bass volume was impressive. Many others have similar stories of how surprised they were at the capability of the D-350.

Now if you want super deep low bass that sets off car alarms blocks away, you may want to look at the D-800 or 800+. For country and rock with a solid, full bass you can dance to, the D-350 is plenty.

If you like boosted lows, the D350 may not be best. It is an amazingly loud amp considering the 350 watt rating. I use mine mostly for upright bass with a Phil Jones C4 cab and it is perfect for that application but for electric bass I use one of the 800 Mesa heads, but, I like a big, warm tone and frequently use the deep switch on my Subway heads that have them.

I can appreciate how difficult it is to choose when you cannot A/B the heads. If your tone goal is clean and clear then the D350 may very well work for you. It is a wonderful sounding amp and can give me that fat bottom I prefer but lacks the power to do my tone at high volume. Of course, the key to high volume is speaker area. If one were to use more cabinets then the volume would be much greater. I have used the D350 with one SW115 and it sounded wonderful but I did not push it too hard because we were in a small room.

I previously owned both the 350 and 800 watt Magellan heads. I thought they were wonderful clear sounding....kind of neutral sounding but lacked the voicing and controls of the Subway heads.

I dont understand this amps place in the market .
I have no doubt it's an excellent little amp. Just confused about the price point compared to something like a d 800. The d800 is about $1.35 per watt, the 350 is almost $2.30 a watt.
I'll do some more reading but on the surface, the larger Amps seem to be better values for the money.
Thats almost a $1 more per watt.

Power has been.getting cheaper and cheaper in most markets, but not in instrument amplification. I wonder why?

No fan is a big selling point for some and those are typically the same people that don't need 800W

Kind of a confusing post...

You would be pushing a D-350 hard through a pair of Genzler BA12 and already have an MG800? Or you're after a small, quiet amp?

MG800 into 2 BA12 is a lot of volume. 3, even moreso.

I would not run a pair of 212 or 410 with a D-350 at high volume. The MG800 - or a D-800+ - would be perfect for that.

Size, weight and being fanless are to characteristics that are different compared to the D-800. It’s 2/3 the size and weight, important to those who don’t need the additional power.

Agreed, if you look at the Mesa Mark V amps for guitar, the 90 Watt is about $39/Watt. and the 25 watt is $79/Watt.

I've got the Mark V:25 head, and it is all I need, plenty loud, and great feature set. Similarly I bought the D-350 because it is all I need for my uses. It's all about personal need/preference, and Mesa ticks the boxes for many people with their different offerings.
