Mesa vs. Aguilar 1x12 review

You gotta hear the pair of 1x12s to believe it ... I doubt you'd need the 15, these things have tons of bass. I left my head completely flat all night. If I'd boosted the lows ... there might have been trouble!

With the 750, you could also do 3 1x12s @2.6 ohms :bassist:

you should be very happy with the Walkabout Scout 12 your expecting. I have both the Walkabout 12 and the Powerhouse 12 that Pickles is talking about. The Walkabout 12 compares really well with the Powerhouse cab. I think it's actually the same Mesa neo 12 in both, just in slightly different box dimensions. If anything, the Walkabout cab has more thick and creamy lows than the Powerhouse, but the same clean mids and highs, and they both share the same adjustable crossover and horn level adjustment features.

Yep. I dig the idea of a vertical tower like that. I used to have the side by side Epi 2x12 with the 1x12 on top. The only folks making a vertical 2x12 I can think of is Genz. Course I'll have to hear both the DB112 and the Mesa before I don't buy either cause I'm broke... :bawl:

I'm so looking forward to this test but i'm not certain the db 750 with the mesa cab will be a good pairing, unless the first experience i had, had a flaw in it.

I once went to a store nearby with my db 750 and hooked it up to a powerhouse 2x12 at 8ohm. Now I haven't messed with the tweeter or the 3-way switch but the sound i got was like playing a swr rig. Cold, sterile, no bottom, only mids.

Could've been that the cab had a problem - by the way i noticed there were some kind of small round velcro looking patches on each drivers - i don't know if it's normal and why those were there.

Could've been because of the settings of the switch and tweeter.

But it sure didn't sound anything like a complete mesa rig i had once heard and nothing like my Aguilar rig.

The 12" mesa drivers have a little mesh patch in the center ... thats normal.

I can see the 750 not getting along with the powerhouses.

But that matter naught when you realize the m-pulse gets you a huge hybrid tube tone at half the weight and much lower cost :D

The only reason I'm preparing for dissapointment is because I'm not 100% sure I'm getting it. I love those amps, and would have one already if they cost less. Fortunately, I found someone near me selling one for $850 :) (I don't know if he'll wait two weeks for me to come up with the money though!).

I missed on the website the word optional.

and I have an old Epi T-112 with caster sockets.

It's a strange world.

Like with like is fine, but I can't help thinking the DB750 would be in the same amp universe as the mesa powerplants.

Now the only thing missing is if you could compare the same kit running through the DB 750. But i guess i'll be finding out for myself before that. I intend on making a field trip and bring my complete Aguilar kit to a store where they have some Mesa and compare both side to side and doing mix-matches between them and maybe throw in some other makes like genz-benz just for the fun of it.

Of course, i'll let you know what i find.

I did a gs112 comparison against a GB NeoX 112. The GB was louder, fuller, and had a sweeter mid growl. It was a bit larger, but had the same weight. It seemed to transfer into deeper lows. I haven't compared the GB against the Mesa directly, but I'd say the two are more similar in tone and size, with the GB being lighter.

I just fired up the mesas using my thunderfunk with tommixx's "DB750 setting" ... and the m-pulse sounds a lot better through these cabs. Not that the t-funk sounds bad at all, but the m-pulse is pure synergy with these.

Hey pickles, you sound pretty sold on the M-Pulse, I'm curious to try one myself. BTW, are you referring to the 600? What other heads have you compared the Mesa to? Any all-tube heads?

Its the best head I've ever had, by far, and better than any rack setup I've used.

Check my profile, I've used just about everything other than all-tube. I'd be curious to try an SVT or 400+ ... but you can't carry either of those in one hand like you can the m-pulse.

Gig report: they sound killer!

I used these at a medium size club last night. For the load in I tried the one cab in each hand approach, which I'll never do again with these cabs. They're just too heavy for that. Loading out one at a time was a breeze though, and WAY easier than the typical 1x15 + 2x10 rig.

This room was really bassy (though not overly "boomy"), and had a hollow stage riser, so I put the cabs on top of a road case, and they still sounded really big even without floor coupling. Full, thick, with nice growl and just enough cutting upper mids. I let the other band's bassist use the rig and he dialed the bass way up and the mids and highs way down ... if you like rumble this setup will sure do it! Not my bag but he seemed happy with it :D

Only thing that went wrong is that the soundman used the DI on the head, so when the stage lights started causing buzzing that wasn't there at soundcheck, the ground lift was on the back panel and I didn't have time to get back there and flick it. NEVER NEVER use the DI on a head, no matter how high quality it is!!! I'm going to buy a countryman or radial so I can intervene next time that happens.
