Well, if you are only basing that upon the audition of the CxL-112, then I'd say that it's more accurate to say that the EA CxL-112 is not for you.

Tom, you are absolutely right. I mis-spoke. I have not tried the other EA cabs. For 'my sound' the EA Cxl 1x12s are not really for me. But it's hard to argue with their popularity, so it is definitely still a quality product.

Oh, it's definitely a quality product. It just happens to sound a bit different from most other EA cabs. It also takes to EQ pretty well, so I can dial in "my tone" on it pretty easily. It also gets really loud for its size. And it sounds great (IME/IMHO) on upright. Lots of good things to say about the CxL-112. I just wanted to point out that it does not define the "EA sound" in my book.

Tom.

Hey, to each his own, so if EA ain't for you, that's cool, but IMHO, before you make that call, definitely at LEAST check out the NL-210. IMHO, the best 210 on the planet.

I used to think there'd be no way the Eden 210xlt could be bested, had a pair for a few years and they sounded GREAT. However, I sold them off because I just got weary of carrying a pair of 70lb cabs around. Thankfully, I was wrong, because I'm a huge 210 kinda' guy, and as much as I like my Aggies, I still prefer 210s. I actually now have a pair of them (long story short, Jive Sound (Jivejong here) is now a preferred vendor of mine).

Anyway, they sound incredible with just about any head I plug in... including, and maybe even especially, the Walkabout... at least to my ears.

I read the explanation and don't buy it. Simple fact - if it boosts then it is not passive in any way. Passive cannot boost at all.

My contention is that if the manual is wrong on such a clear and simple point, then some of its more bizarre claims - such as those excerpted above - become even more suspect.

+1 the manual is incorrect. I can't find the explanation, but it's not really a 'boost' like they say in the manual. It sounds great, so I guess no big deal, but when I finally read the 'true description' written by the Mesa techs and not the marketing guys (!), it made sense.

Not to be contrary, but just in case someone pops into this thread, and thinks this is a bad product...

I love my Walkabout Scout. I haven't even read the instructions. I just plug in, fiddle with some knobs, and play. It sounds great.

I think everyone agrees:) Just wanted to make sure we remember...

+1... timely post! I wish I could find that particular post that explained that wonderful but unusual mid control. Oh well, per your comment, they sound great, so who cares!

Yes, they do sound great. I've read my manual and it looks like it was written by the sale department. There are mistakes, such as the pre-post switch which doesn't exist on the Walkabout. But there is some useful information, such as the frequencies of the semiparametric eq.

But for a 13 lb head the Walkabout puts out some serious, high quality sound. The Scout cabinets are also very efficient and sound much bigger than they should considering their size.

I really like mine and don't consider trading it for anything else.

Depends...

To be the devil's advocate, it depends on what they mean by "control".

AFIAK...

Most active controls deal with controlling an amplifier (op amp) circuit centered at the unity gain level (no boost/cut). Also, AFAIK, the control is NOT in the signal path. It's more of a bias control.

Now, if you have a simple attenuator on the output side of the amp circuit, that could technically be called a "passive" control, because it doesn't control the amp circuit, it just attenuates it's (boosted) output. Personally, I'd think that'd be bad, though, because then the attenuator is in the signal path, which might hurt tone a tiny bit.

Regardless of whether I'm right or not, I still don't agree with their choice of docs. I'd have said EITHER "passive control" and not ever talked about boost, or, "a boost only active control". I also acknowledge their other docs issues, as well, so being "suspect" of it's contents makes sense to me... unfortunately.

+2!!

I know we're doing a little bashing here, but really they're minor details in the big picture, and yeah, I don't want new visitors to get the wrong idea either. I love mine as well.

Not much to add in the way of experience with this amp. I will say I've read half this MEGA THREAD and can't wait to finish it.

I will also say I've got GAS bad for one and am going to try and find one locally to audition.

What do these go for used?

Great thread Vic and all!!!

:crying:

"It's Out Of My Life
It's Out Of My Life
And I Don't Know Whether To Laugh Or Cry
I Don't Know Whether To wet or dry
It would cut Like A Knife
It's Out Of My Life

It's Out Of My Hands
It's Out Of My Hands
To Think For Two Years it Was Here
And I Took it to gigs for others to hear
Won't play it with any more bands
It's Out Of My Hands

So I've Learned That tone's Not Possession
I've Learned That tone Won't always Weight
Now I've Learned That tone Needs Expression
Not just turned up past eight

It's Out Of My Life
It's Out Of My Life
Can't afford two amps but it was a great ride
It's still got that thick, rich tone Inside
It still Cuts Like A Knife
To irritate somebody else's wife..."

(But my Jack Read custom Bass Purity tube preamp into Stewart World 1.2 will ease my pain...)

Does that mean I have unsubscribe from this thread???

Fellow Walkabout Tinkerers! A little warning. I haven't figured it out yet, but my Walkabout has a high pitched 'buzz' in it now that I can't get rid of. I've been screwing around with it a lot, and I hope I haven't jacked it up. I just wanted ya'll to know that you might want to be careful. I know Vic has worked successully on his with no problem, so...

This noise sounds like a power problem, but I ran it through my Furman Power Conditioner and that didn't improve it.
I also changed the preamp tubes and that didn't fix. I haven't gotten it out of the house yet, so it could still be a power supply problem...

Crap, crap, crap...:rollno:
