Like what you can do on a fretless instrument... fretless bass for example. When you are rocking your finger on the fingerboard very quickly you get a vibrato effect.

I seriously wouldnt recommend that for a bass, you will lose a lot if not most of your bottom end. if you need distortion for bass i would go with the electro harmonics big muff pi bass distortion pedal.was refering to this
