Personally I'd find a kick going boom boom boom boom more annoying than a simple click. So I use a kick or some full beats.
Me too. Plus, I think sharp, staccato clicks are better than dull thumps if you're working seriously on rhythmic patterns, note lengths, and such. Drum tracks can be fun to jam to, but simple clicks are probably better for serious shedding.
Whenever possible I prefer a basic mechanical metronome...

That's an excellent point about using staccato sounds!
Has to be a staccato sound.
I like a closed hihat or a mid frequency beep.
A high frequency click gets really annoying and IME is harder to 'bury the click' (play so accurately the click almost disappears) when playing bass.

Is's a funny thing, but my experience is that the sound of a traditional mechanical metronome seems to be audible whatever the circumstances...
I generally prefer something like a mid frequency beep with a fast decay. "Cowbell" seems to be a common option but I find that sound annoying. On my Tunable app I use the "classic 2" setting for the metronome sound.
Regarding drum tracks: they are great to practice to but (in my opinion) they serve a different purpose from a mere click/beep. If you really want to zero in on your timing and increase your awareness of your time-related weaknesses then a metronome is going to be much more helpful than a drum track.

simple click for me. i also record myself playing with it about once a week. Not a pro recording or anything, just with a phone. I will try and play just behind, record it, and see how I did. Then I play right on the beat and listen back. instant feedback!

I'm another fan of the old school mechanical metronome. That woody THOCK-THOCK-THOCK is my fave. I have a couple electronic metronomes that emulate that sound fairly well. I HATE the chirp-chirp of most modern metronomes.
I used to hate my metronome when I was a kid because of the beeps.

Can't stand the beeps, but I'll work with them in the studio. They're too shrill. I prefer sounds like rhythm sticks being clicked together. I also still love my Yamaha metronome from the 80s. Simple is best. You don't want your timing device to be producing a sound that you find distracting or even unpleasant.
I practice to the backing tracks I gig with as a bass-playing singer-songwriter. When I help a mate practice for his band, we play over a drum loop on my phone.
I too prefer the old school metronome and unfortunately so does my cat!
